CLAUD BUTLER ‘COMPETITOR’ BY HOLDSWORTH – 1981.

Not sure there is a hard and fast rule as to when these were used, I guess you could have them added before they were officially used. Alternately they could have been added by owners much latter. Holdsworth used them on Pro & Mistrals as far back as ~010200 and I have a 78 Pro SL with them...

    Proper Barn Find

Final coat of Kurust and then primer. Will need to fill any remaining pits. Quite a difference from how it was, I am sure the metal has thinned a bit, but no structural problems found.

    Proper Barn Find

Forks are primed and the frame is down to bare metal. At the stage where I am going to be removing too much good metal to get any more of the rust off. Having treated it with Kurust I am not getting any red dust of the pitting, prime the frame next.

    '81 Claud Butler Colstar Yumeya/DuraAce #035210 FINISHED p16

Nice, I have an old Special frame that was given to me. Some previous owner cut all the lugs of to make a fixie of it. I have got most of the lug ready to repair it and was thinking of painting it exactly the same a the one you have here having seen that picture in the catalog. Nice to see a...

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers Update

Interesting, I have just picked up something similar. I came to the same conclusion based on frame geometry. 39" wheel base and 16.5" rear stays, with 74 deg angels. It also has those two drillings in the rear drop out which are also chromed on the sides. Mine is a bit latter in 81 and has cut...

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers Update

Number looks to be mid 83, although its on the back of the BB which is bit unusual, but they did move it around occasionally. Would need more photos to confirm model. That said the 83 model was distinctive and only available in white with the lug cut outs coloured in black. if the colour in the...

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers Update

yes that would seem to be a 1977 build. Difficult to know what colour that is as the Cats. do not specify a colour, as you could have any one. the picture in the 78 Cat. looks similar. I understand Mario Vaz is still painting frames and may be able to advise if this is a std Holdsworth colour.

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers

I have to say I am struggling a bit with those combination of items. If it didn't have mudguards eyes it could well be an early factory pro although I am not sure when the brake bridge went straight and the pro never had eyes as std. I guess it could be a special build of some type, but I am...

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers

That number would suggest 1949 and there were only a few models that year, the lug less LaQuelda and the Cyclone. As yours has track ends I can only see it as a Cyclone track model. That said I can not see the detail of the lugs as looking the same. You might want to check this out here...

    Holdsworth Special. Frame number 104?

Yes, I would see this as a 531 Special with early 70's 4 digit number. Bit of an odd group of numbers these so could be difficult to determine exactly who built it.

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers

Nice looking bike, bit difficult to ID, could do with close ups of the lug work and rear brake bridge. Holdsworth used 4 digit numbers in the early 60's and seemed to again in early 70's. For numbers below 1000 there were 3 digit without a leading zero, so I assume this is from one of these...

    Proper Barn Find

down to bare metal all over, small bits of rust left which ill treat individually. Will need some filling while priming.

    Holdsworth Frame Numbers

Looks good, yes I would say early 81.

    Proper Barn Find

Interesting, i'll bear that in mind. I am getting somewhere with the forks now. Given them another brush with Evaporust and now back wrapped up in soaked paper towels. Think Ill do the same with frame next.

    Couple of Holdsworths from 1958

A couple from 1958, Monsoon and Shop built Factory Special Zephyr. I have had the Monsoon for several years now and it has been in various forms, but now runs 3sp Benelux gears. As I am collecting more single speeds the 3sp fits well. https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/...-speed.381566/ The...

    Proper Barn Find

Could be getting a bit ahead of myself here, but forked out for a Brooks saddle for the eventual re-build. Don't really need it yet, but the B17 Special looked nice even if not totally original; it weighs a tonne!. Never had one before so will be nice to see what they are like. Also got some...

Tecnotrat 'Nickel' Aelle Blu NI 71. Tricolour 600 Shimano

Thanks, Yes I think this is the most likely option for the origin of this frame, but built for which bike shop? Guess i'll never know, but it came with Holdsworth decals so possibly post RT era before it closed? I also have seen a Shorter frame with very similar features, maybe they used them...

Please help identify maker of "nickel" frame

Yes, that's I nice looking frame. I think, as you say, frame size stamping is the best indicator and I think mine got out without a frame number on it. So i assume a contract build for someone, could be the Holdsworth shop as mine came with with their badges, I guess i'll never know now. I was...

70's Europa but not the one most of you are thinking of

Thanks, Yes I get the distinct impression it is a contract build, but who for is the big question. There are a number of possibilities, but the seat stay attachment and the number on the BB socket with no obvious frame number does seem the only significant details. Thanks for your help.
