1996 Marin Monocoque - Build Thread

I used to cycle to work at a US bank in Canary Wharf. There was one of these locked up in the basement cycle area which didn't move in the six years I worked there. I guess someone rode it to work one day and decided they didn't fancy riding home again.

    Today's Ride

ANZAC Day in Aus today. After the wreath-laying, I took off for a bit of a road/gravel session. Beautiful autumn day, bit breezy but took it easy and enjoyed the views. 26km, 237m climbing.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

"This bicycle, called the 'RELATIVITY Special', if pedalled at 90rpm, is designed to travel faster than the speed of light. This is proven by a description of the gear ratios on the sheets seen on the wall behind it. One revolution of the pedals sends the bike 6 times around the earth. (It is...

    Today's Ride

Glorious autumn day here in New South Wales's Southern Tablelands. Left it a bit late but tooled around the usual hilly gravel roads and rough paths outside town for an hour. Fitness gradually returning, although the ankle I broke still gets a bit hurty at times. 19 km, 250m climbing. Worth...

    Today's Ride

Bit of a different one today -- my sister-in-law has expressed a wish to do some longer rides with me and turned up recently with a Scott Atacama hybrid as her preferred mount. It was in terrible shape -- neglected, rusty chain, seized fork, seized suspension seatpost, huge heavy rear rack. I...

1998 Kona Explosif work in progress

Managed to grab an hour's ride this morning and was pleased overall with the new fork -- I think it felt a little lighter, and there was certainly no topping-out when lifting the front over obstacles. It was pretty squishy when climbing out of the saddle, though, which isn't a huge issue as I...

I may be wrong, but this looks a tad over-engineered to me . . .

In the article the author says it's powdercoat: "Instead of opting for Cjell’s signature clear coat or turbo midnight finish, I got my SB2 powder coated by Cjell’s finisher, Karl. It’s the same Prismatic Powder color I used on my old Mystic Alluvium bike and a finish Bruce Gordon used to spec...

1998 Kona Explosif work in progress

No spin yet -- yesterday we had rain all day and I had to work anyway -- making a living is such an inconvenience! On reflection I agree with you re rideability -- I don't want my bikes to be wallhangers so if there's an issue like there was with this one's original fork, putting a better...

1998 Kona Explosif work in progress

Glad you like it! I'll try to get a ride in tomorrow to see how well it works -- or not. As for the Atoms, I'm in two minds -- they're the originals, but then the originality train has long left the station, with rideability being the deciding factor, so I'm not sure they'll ever make it back...
