    Yet another lava dome!!! (1994)

Love the paint on this generation of Kona -- very much part of their appeal, IMO. Reading all the tips about patching / restoring with great interest. A vote for Nitto bars here -- these are the 'For Shred' bars I found for my protracted Unit build.

A little help, if you can please (fundraising)

Many years ago my nephew was diagnosed with Leukaemia aged two. I was totally unprepared for the power of my reaction -- I would have done anything to help make him better, from donating bone marrow to selling my home. He was in the Sick Kids' hospital in Edinburgh and went through four blocks...

    Bar ends yay or nay?

They did seem to go out of vogue as riser bars and wider bars came in -- they were great on the narrower bars that were standard up to about '98 or so. I had angled X-Lites on my P7 which were great for varying hand position, particularly when climbing. Was it Kona who made a little attachment...

    2004 Kona Unit resurrection

It's been a frustrating few months with severe back pain preventing much in the way of riding or working on bikes -- any kind of bending sends the old lumbar region into spasm. X-rays and MRI scans have shown 'general wear and tear due to ageing' so there's not much to be done except avoid...

Do you notice extreme negative views of none retrobikers when you say you are trying to work with an older bike?

There are times when the newest and most advanced gear has a certain attraction but when it comes to cycling, I tell myself that the retro gear I have is still better than the engine I saddle it with -- ie me. In other words, I can gain more by getting fitter and working on my skills than by...

    Job interview

Having done about 100 interviews with no success since the beginning of COVID, I'm not well qualified to give advice -- but if they ask you if you have any questions, a good one is to ask what training opportunities they offer because you love knowledge and are a 'lifelong learner' . . .

If it's any help, I had a '98 that didn't have disc mounts so maybe you're looking at '99 and beyond.

    Musical instruments

Excellent -- hope the lessons go well. Have just been deep in a text conversation with my stepson who has decided he'd like to learn bass so he can jam with his drummer flatmate. I'm all for this kind of thing.
