1998 Kona Explosif work in progress

I've never done a thread on this bike although it has featured elsewhere here, but was fiddling about with it today and thought it might be nice to document it a bit better. This one goes back to early days of Covid when, like a million others, I decided it was a good time to start on a...

    Today's Ride

We're into Autumn proper now -- three days of incessant rain followed by a nice clear day, but strong gusty winds. That said, it was very good to be out on the bike for an hour.

    1996 Hei Hei in Queensland

I think it is. I contacted the seller to see if the serial no. was listed here -- he says it is. And he's decided to hang onto the bike!

    1996 Hei Hei in Queensland

You watch the internet for years (four in my case) and a Hei Hei in a rideable size, in the same country, comes up when you're broke and can't buy it! Looks like a decent bike, doesn't appear to be a scam. No serial number shown though. Hope this link works...

    2004 Kona Unit resurrection

Some further progress: ordered some very fancy tyres -- Rene Herse Rat Trap Pass 26 x 2.3. I wasn't really taken with the tan sidewalls, but it was the only version available at the time, so there you are. The chain is currently marinating in degreaser while I look for the singlespeed...

    Today's Ride

Back in the saddle again today -- there's a tinge of autumn in the air and next week the clocks will go back, so am trying to make up for something of a lost summer. Took the '98 Explosif this time and revelled in how nicely it climbs, despite needing a bit of a clean and lube. On the dirt farm...

    Thomson

Product liability arse-covering at its finest. The parts are used in vigorous outdoor pursuits, but climate controlled storage is the only way to ensure they don't deteriorate . . .

    Thomson

They used to have a high incidence of cracked faceplates and would replace them if asked. I don't think they'll do it for 25.4mm versions though as they don't make them anymore. You can still find new replacement faceplates for 31.8mm bars. This one is sitting waiting for the day when a...

    Today's Ride

Finally . . . first proper ride today after breaking my ankle in December. Truth is, the doc cleared me for riding some weeks ago but found myself a little nervous of climbing into the saddle again. Maybe you develop a kind of sixth sense around an injured part while it's healing, but every...

Optimistically Priced Custom Built 753 Condor Mountain Bike 1994/95

If you're not a poor man when you start out in this hobby, you will be after a couple of years . . . (And the Condor is lovely . . . someone may just pony up the asking price for that)

    Kona Fire Mountain repaint

Minor update -- fitted the new stem, which was the first quill version I've ever done. It's not hugely different from the longer one but I can feel the difference in riding position which is the desired effect.

    1993 Kona Hahanna - seized stem/bits missing :D

Looks like a really nice project. I like the grinder solution for the stuck crankset, too.
