i'm gonna annoy you with this one, 2024 Kona Explosif!

Appreciate the effort, but it just looks weird. Especially as it's not in the places where bikes typically rust.

    Clown Bike

Yes, I once rode a similar BMX like bike to this clown bike with reverse steering at somewhere like Trentham gardens.

Is there much difference in quality between cheap freewheels and the name brands?

Finding the gear will be tougher on a 10 spd cog over a 5 spd one. Everything's narrower and will require more subtle movements.

Is there much difference in quality between cheap freewheels and the name brands?

If you can, perhaps try before you buy. IME, the nature of freewheels is they tend to be wobblier than cassettes, and more cogs will make it harder to find the gear if unindexed (although likely you will develop muscle memory over time). Once upon a time, I ran an 7spd freewheel, and it was...

Is there much difference in quality between cheap freewheels and the name brands?

That's a cassette rather than a freewheel. And doesn't seem particularly cheap for 8 speed. I would say at the low end of the market at 6-7-8 speed - there's probably not much in it, providing they have the right spacing for your gears (assuming you need indexing). The indexing can be a bit...

Is there a non destructive way to remove 3 piece crank without a puller?

`You can use a cold chisel and a hammer to remove them. Place the chisel on the rear of the crank arm close to the axle. Give it tap - and then do the opposite side. I've done that when I have had ones which have been threaded. It does leave marks though, but perhaps a modified version might...

    Innovations that weren't...

Engineers are some of the most arrogant people I've come across. Even, or perhaps especially, when commenting outside of their domain when they nearly always have iconoclastic views at odds with 99% of those actually working in that field. I know a local one who still insists solar panels don't...

    Raleigh Chopper MK2 - you'll never see a worse one...ever!

Jaysus, and there are people bidding on it too. I'm not sure there's enough material left there to make it worth scrapping. It really is a bike shaped object.

aliexpress forks - yay or nay?

There are differences in cultural expectations which make this tricky. I was told by a high up in ICI in the 90s that the Chinese never stop negotiating. You agree a price, and they send something which is lower quality than what you saw. It's a cultural expectation that you will challenge...

The Kirk certainly isn't shit. Just a wrong direction. If you were going to put together something like this - it has to be iconic dead ends and noticeably odd so that it's a talking piece. Kirk frame works. Flex stem works. Biopace works. clips/straps for pedals. Super long seatpost for arse...

    Innovations that weren't...

Damn...I liked self-energising brakes. They worked well expect the threads were made of cheese. The Porcs weren't bad either, and kind of trailed the trend for soft tyres to improve grip.

aliexpress forks - yay or nay?

The trouble with Aliexpress purchases is that there's little to no come back if it proves faulty - and while there are some reputable and cheap Chinese brands out there, the frauds will copy cat them. It's truly the wild west.

What is going on? Piles of bikes …

Cost of living crisis. Interest in cycling has reverted to the long term mean ie a fringe activity. People getting older, and/or swapping to ebikes. Bottom has completely fallen out. Fantastic if you are buying.
