Mike I can sense your more than a bit miffed about import duty however it’s a UK tax and if you voted for brexit then your paying for the consequences of leaving the single market - if you didn’t vote for brexit it’s going too sting ! And to add insult to injury theres an admin fee on top to pay

Nope, it prevented the chain getting stuck on the chain ring and then jamming up - which resulted in a number of outcomes You had to stop to release the jammed chain The chain often took chunks out of the rear stay - especially on Aluminium frames The resulting jam bends or damages a chain...

I’ve got a home made one in my Pace - fitted it back in mid 90’s with no copper slip on the bolts so it’s now a permanent fixture Bit of history I guess just like yours

I must confess out of idle curiosity I knowingly bought a Faux Chris King - seller was even up front about it I was expecting square bearing but in fairness for the money it was okay .... however I wouldn't risk my teeth with a Fake bar or stem...
