    Olmo Monoroller

Thinking back, I probably bought it in the late 1970s/early 1980s. I've searched the 'net a few times but so far haven't found any trace of others.

    Olmo Monoroller

A long time ago (almost half a century or so) I had an Olmo Monoroller indoor trainer. Following fashion, after a few years all my bikes had gear cables routed under the BB shell which made using the device impossible so I bought a Tacx and disposed of the Monoroller - or so I thought until one...

    Old Italian Columbus frame!

There's a lot of rumour about 'Gilco' tubing. I don't know the full story but the company produces tubing in various shapes and configurations for more applications than you can shake a stick at. The name comes from GILberto COlombo, who was part of the family that owned the tube mill which...

    Seat bolt question

5/16" UNC = 18tpi BSW = 18tpi but the thread angle is different to UNC so one into the other is a bit tight BSF = 22tpi UNF = 24tpi BSC = 26tpi

    Raleigh identification

If it was a team rep of some sort it's missing the blue paint at the top of the seat tube. Team colours were blue over white - the red and yellow flashes were actually part of the decal set.

    Raleigh identification

Looks similar to Panasonic Raleigh team colours. No hanger on the drive side dropout so maybe a few years before 1988, perhaps a Team Cadet but I'm almost certain that they had integral hangers so maybe not.

Wanted French threaded freewheel 6 or 7 speed Steel or alloy

ISTR that we had 3 boards. A blue one (Maillard) and a white one (Suntour) in the shop and another on a wall in the workshop with Regina Extra and Oro on it. Availability (or lack of) of replacement cogs for cassettes is yet another thing that bugs me these days. I spend a good 75% of my time...

    The British bike thread

In Norman times a stone was 12 pounds and 8 ounces which made 8 stones 100 pounds - a hundred weight. Then early in the medieval era one of the kings (I forget which) messed around with weighs and measures trying to standardise things nationally - part of that changed a stone to be 14 pounds...

    The British bike thread

Very similar to my dad's bike. I suspect he'd gone for some options or changed things later, his had a quick release toggle chain a Swallow saddle and a Williams crank set. Decades of use by him and myself over which it suffered multiple strippings and both hand and rattle-can resprays, a change...

    Vintage Jersey advice

GS Misintese is (or was) a sports club in Misinto near Monza, used to stage a amateur race towards the end of the season each year.

    The British bike thread

Confirmed this afternoon by my father, it was a Super Sports. He would have bought a Lenton Clubman but couldn't quite afford it. He changed the drop bars for flats pretty quickly. Photos to follow sometime maybe if my mother finds the correct album.

    New Tyre Question - Noise

Some months back I noticed the rear tyres of both my road bikes had strange blisters which seemed to have appeared after I'd been using them on an indoor trainer. Right - bought a trainer-specific tyre and built a dedicated wheel for it. I changed out the two rear tyres this week and being a...

    The British bike thread

In that case, no. Before it was reprofiled the bend at Steeton (a pair of semi-detached houses at the side of the road) was sharp enough that you were lucky to keep a car on the correct carriageway if you were travelling at more than 50mph. Mind you, your average car didn't handle too well back...

    The British bike thread

There's about 5 miles of the York-Malton cycleway left, mainly as a shared path between Harton and Huttons Ambo though even there it tends to disappear and reappear randomly and at times seems to be about a foot wide. The York-Tadcaster cycleway is in much better condition although due to road...

Tell me about my wheel (late 70s early 80s?)

Yes, more often than not there was a year marked on the inside face of lock nuts. I've got a couple in my box of spares that are plain but all the rest have markings. Cones were marked with their idiosyncratic mixture of metric diameter and Imperial thread TPI.

Tell me about my wheel (late 70s early 80s?)

Unless there's a fault you should never touch the axle of a Campagnolo hub from that era. The shoulders of the rim appear to be too round for how I remember Fiamme and Mavic. The spokes suggest early aero stuff so probably early 1980s and they'll most likely be stainless steel. A bit of work...

    1976 Sid Mottram project

Every time I see the title of this thread I think it would have made a great name for a prog-rock band back in the 70s. And now ladies and gentlemen, freshly returned from their world tour - The Sid Mottram Project!

    Old Jersey

U.S. = Unione Sportiva. As you can guess, it's 'Sports Union' so 'sports club' in English.

    Old Jersey

Most likely Gruppo Ciclo or Gruppo Ciclistico. Lit: Group Cycle or Group Cycling. So yes, Cycle Club would be the best English version.

Vintage Falcon road bike in almost original condition

Brigg, back before the M180 was extended. During the winter it was the coldest, dampest, most miserable place that it's ever been my misfortune to live.
