    The British bike thread

A&P was one of the companies that formed TI just after the First World War. Reynolds became part of TI about a decade later. The remains of A&P tube manufacture is now part of Tyco Tube in Oldbury.

Francesco Moser £400 & Vitus 979 £350 in Alford Lincolnshire

Should have done some better research. Moser rode TdF once, in 1975, won a couple of stages and the young rider's competition, held the yellow jersey for about a week but didn't win the race. And unusually for a continental, he always had his front brake operated by the right hand brake lever.

    Lovely but...

No sign of it. There's a slight chance that the frame could be in the loft 'cos I've not got that far yet. I suspect that the FW hub is built into a 27" wheel in a bike I haven't got around to stripping yet. I've found the rather tatty Brooks Swallow which was on it - along with another that I'd...

    Any idea what this is?

Barry Barron used to build frames - at a guess I'd say that's a basic cooking frame that's been modded with a few braze-ons.

    Lovely but...

Really you have to fall very lucky to sell a bike for what you imagine it's worth unless you're really pessimistic. I've been sorting through and disposing of my parent's collection of bikes while well aware that the chances of finding somebody who wants the exact idiosyncratic combinations of...

    Lovely but...

It's only the saddle, the large flange hubs and maybe the pedals that match up with the paint job in my eyes.

Decent frame pump . What happened to them

It is. Mostly not from in the atmosphere but as part of industrial production of gases and other products. Unless marked otherwise the CO₂ in cartridges is most likely 'food grade' (so 99.lots of 9s % pure) but don't risk putting one in a drinks carboniser unless you're absolutely certain of...

Decent frame pump . What happened to them

While sorting through 50 years of junk in my parent's garage last week I found three pumps - a frame fit Bluemel, a frame fit Truflo and a still boxed unused Zefal Maxi HP floor pump. The washer in the Bluemel is dust and it's too big for any of my frames anyway so will be going to the tip, the...

Decent frame pump . What happened to them

I'd rather pump up a fat tyre with a full-sized pump than a mini. The problem I found with putting a FF pump on my sloping frame was the shorter seat tube meant that the length required was far shorter than any pump I already owned, I can only imagine how difficult a task it would be for the...

Decent frame pump . What happened to them

Back in the 1980s plastic SILCA pumps had a reputation of exploding in use. During clubs runs it wasn't unusual to see the shaft of one arcing across a road like a wayward fireworks rocket whilst a clubmate struggled to deal with a puncture without losing too much time.

Decent frame pump . What happened to them

Talking of pumps, does anybody else still modify theirs with a small hole at the top of the cylinder barrel? Positioned just into the section swept by the piston washer, back in my younger years the theory was that it allowed the cylinder to fill fully rather than relying on what passed by the...

Topeak Master Blaster Large is out of stock.

    Sorted no longer needed

Brooks steel nose bolts were 5/16" BSF so 22tpi. Don't know about the titanium ones and don't know if things have changed since Selle Royal took control. Genuine replacement bolts are fairly easy to obtain and aren't expensive.

    How rare is it

There was a Canadian Kilo TT rider at either the Worlds or the Olympics in the 1980s who had transmission on both sides of the bike. A low gear freewheel welded backwards to the left side of a flip-flop hub and a high gear fixed sprocket set right at the beginning of the threads on the right...

    Beryl Burton's 1967 Otley 12-Hour Course

I'm certain that there will be a full set of 1970s/80s Yorkshire OS maps somewhere in my parent's house, I'll take a look later this week.

    Beryl Burton's 1967 Otley 12-Hour Course

From what I remember, in the 1980s the Otley 12 hour used a finishing circuit that used roads around Cattal, Tockwith and Long Marston. That's from 40 year old memories and following extensive re-routing of the A1 a lot of the roads between Wetherby and Boroughbridge have little resemblance to...

    Single Speed Bike Gear Ratio

(Chain ring teeth / sprocket teeth) * 27 = gear size in inches. Actually means nothing at all, it's just a way of comparing gear ratios without the awkward 2.1564:1 stuff as you can relate that <60" is really low while >80" is high and anything over 100" is really high. Our continental friends...

    Single Speed Bike Gear Ratio

50x25 would be very low - it's 54" in old Imperial-speak. I'd go for something like a 19 or a 20 sprocket, which would give you 71" or 67.5" respectively.

626/A Part number and bolt 7350009/7161012

They always used to be s*ds to get started on a new clip. Often it was a case of using a.n.other nut & bolt to tighten the clip until it complied with the curve of the tubing then replacing it with the Campagnolo nut&bolt (which used to be parts 777 & 609/1)

Anyone running TPU inner tubes yet?

Last summer I tried some TPU 'Race Formula' brand tubes - made in China by an anonymous company. As I (knock on wood) usually don't puncture much I thought I'd take a chance. The following are extracts from something I wrote elsewhere about them. Fitting: Add a bit of air to round out the tube...
