    1982 Raleigh Clubman 25" frame

WN2 would be an October 1982 production date, I believe, which could/would make it a model year '83 bike. Not that it matters much. Spec for both years is a double-butted 531 main triangle, which is consistent with a 27.2 seat post.

Rackless Handlebar Bags - Anyone Use Them?

On my bikes that don't have a front rack I often use this bag support. It keeps the tops of my bars free for my hands, and works well with a medium-sized rando bag.

    New Project '59 Experto Crede

My go-to chain is a KMC 8-speed for anything up to 8-speeds. Usually works well. However, I have run into thicker T.A. Cyclotouriste chain rings that were made to work with 1/8" chains, while most derailleurs want 3/32". In those cases I use the SRAM PC1 1/8" chain.

    New Project '59 Experto Crede

On one of my first Shimergo projects I used a fairly modern Deore: It shifted well, but I didn't like its bulky looks, so I swapped it for an older, more elegant SIS mech:

    New Project '59 Experto Crede

Those look lovely. '97 Record, methinks. The only year for 9-speed with pointy hoods for Record. While the later, more rounded levers may be a bit lighter and more ergonomic, I prefer the more classic looks of these. Combine them with a Shimano SIS derailleur of the era and Robert's your uncle...

    New Project '59 Experto Crede

Thank you. Much appreciated. :) Lovely Hetchins, @Jez Nemeth ! Great paint job, too. Love that colour! I have indeed built a number of tourers with Campagnolo Ergo brake shifters. Old (pre-2001) 9-speed shifters pull exactly the right amount of cable per click for a Shimano SIS rear mech to...

    Mercian Saved!

Well, that is a bit of a challenge when you make good quality products that hold up well functionally and will outlast their owners. Not much of a business model in our current economic system. For that reason I am glad they were picked up by people with (I assume) some business sense. With...

    Vintage Falcon help

Welcome, @kendoNaga ! It's not a high end model, but for £20 you did well. The pedals look to be Lyotard 460D's, and those alone are worth the price of admission, IMO. Looks like a clean & lube is pretty much all it needs to get it back on the road. FYI: Koolstop makes excellent - if somewhat...

Frame Designs that Shouldn't Work but Do!

Don't know about "shouldn't work", but I was very pleasantly surprised by this ingenious design. A folding bike that rides just like a normal bike. Gearing options are somewhat limited, and the (virtual) seat tube angle changes with the saddle height. At 26 lbs it is pretty light, too. The...

Some more finetuning today. I think it's ready for some classic cyclotourisme in the French countryside.

Haven't done any fully loaded touring in decades, but mrs non-fixie and I do like to take our bikes out to France or Italy for a week of credit card touring every now and then. Luggage on the bike is usually limited to a front bag or saddle bag. Pictured below is my '84 Koga-Miyata Randonneur...

What can you tell me about Halfords bikes?

Last week I found a newspaper ad from 1977 for my Halfords Sport touring bike. Fl. 339 equals €420 or £360 in today's money, which made it a pretty good deal: The bike I have has long ago been stripped of its parts for use in other projects, but the frame was still hanging in the rafters. It...
