I don't think the extended seat tube lug looks right for a Giant. Doesn't look like an Alan either, but they were also the first two that sprung to mind for me too. Possibly Hagan/Battaglin/whoever-else-used-that-frame Titanal?

Yes, it will have been made in January. I don't really have enough 88 and 89 serials to form firm conclusions as yet. Powdercoat is usually the cheapest option and you can get some nice finishes these days. Worth a shot with a wanted ad - if someone has one it is likely to be cheaper than a new...

All the 1989 Timberline pictures show a chainstay ubrake. That is probably a failure of memory on my part!

Also, if you want to get the 1989 riding again then you could measure what length fork you need (I assume 1" steerer?) and put up an ad in the wanted section. Someone will probably have a suitable one for a reasonably cheap price.
