    Today's Ride

Still clicking, maybe it's the left pedal or the loose chain lock, anyway just riding in the plain today

    Today's Ride

Preparations for tomorrows ride: Since I’ve cleaned and re greased the pulleys of my rear derailleur, the squeaking noises have disappeared, but now I hear a clicking under load and I suspect it’s from the bottom bracket. So I’ve replaced it with a BB-UN71 from my latest 1 € catch from ebay...

Is the price of parts putting you off?

25 years ago fellow students had cars like Mercedes /8 and the cool guys were driving old S-class from the sixties. You could even spot 190 SL or 170 V in the traffic every day. Nobody thought much about their value. Today they are kept in the garage, because they must be worth something 🥸 It...

What do you think of Shimano ditching rim brakes in 105 and higher?

What about direct mount? Any good or better than center mount? I’ve never tried it but I remember Heine promoting center pull with frame mounts. The Shand on page 12 is a nice bike but also shows a big disadvantage of center mount if you want to fit mudguards.

What do you think of Shimano ditching rim brakes in 105 and higher?

I guess a lot of riders who might have decided for a 105 group in the past are looking for GRX anyway. On the other hand, for the serious road rider 105 is just entry level. Afair there were rumors that they are going to replace everything sub 105 with something like Cues. I have Sora and Claris...

    Today's Ride

Another walk instead of cycling, but even walking was hard in the wet snow and the 20 km took me almost 5 hours. After 10 km I had wet feet (Gore Tex failed once more) and only walked along the side of the road instead of trails. I’m just not prepared any more for this conditions 🤷‍♂️

State of the industry: a running thread

Sport Scheck should have already been sold to sportsdirect by Signa but in fact wasn't and went into administration this week. Signa Holding has filed for bankruptcy in Austria. It looks like the whole house of cards is collapsing

No rhyme no reason just 1 Retrobike pic per post.

That's nice. What shifters and bars are these? 😃

State of the industry: a running thread

Although the thread title has changed, news from Signa are getting worse. Today another german subsidiary has filed for insolvency and rumours say the whole network of companies ist about to crash 💥

    Today's Ride

A pulley wheel of my rear derailleur started making annoying loud squeaking noises today, probably time to clean the drivetrain 😬

State of the industry: a running thread

Meanwhile Signa is selling the jewels like KaDeWe department store in Berlin. I guess there is trouble ahead for Kaufhof, the last department store chain in Germany, which was lead into insolvency twice in 3 years by Signa and 700 millions of public funds wasted 💩

my logic with cable disc brakes and why they don't work well on drop bar levers, am i right?

I’ve had Shimano 517 (same as CX77), Avid BB7S and TRP Spyre, with two generations of Sora levers. Maybe I have become more skillful adjusting mechanicals over the time, but I’d say Spyres are the best, taken as a whole. Use the Jagwire KEB Kit with those flexible housings for the bars. Cut...

Install new cable. Pull lever. Tighten caliper. It’s simple.

Meanwhile in Austria: The Signa founder was coerced by his shareholders to step back and hand over the business to a trustee. 10 billions in debt 🍿

    Today's Ride

Rhine and rain today. I’ve changed the brakes on my retro gravel from 734 XT to 900 XTR some time time ago just for curiosity because I found a pair cheap on ebay. Hard to tell if there is a difference in braking power but definitely the nicest canti brakes I’ve had in my hands so far ❤️
