Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

With the fork I’m not really bothered about it being period correct (although if that’s what will work best and not too expensive, I’m also not against it) but will most forks from later be too long even if they are shorter travel (60-80mm)? I’ve got some 63mm travel judys on the way from eBay...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

I just measured the bottom bracket that I took out of the bike and it seems to be 115mm (unless these callipers are dodgy , they were cheap so could be haha) did you think that it would be 122.5 because that’s what should be in the bike or what’s correct for those cranks or from the numbers I...

If anyone has any suspension forks that they think might be suitable for an early marin that they’re looking to sell I’d be interested. 1 1/8 thread-less. cheers

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Im going with the 1x drivetrain, I bought one of the superstar 34t narrow wide chainrings . Now I’m looking at rear derailleurs , can anyone explain why the ‘long cage’ shimano M600 SGS is recommended for use with a smaller cassette than the ‘medium cage’...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

I could very well be wrong but I think the Marin forks I took out of the Eldridge grade are 1 1/8 and so are the j3s. Not sure about the mags. Don’t think I’m going to be using either on that frame anyway

Both of these look great too. The sort of standards I am unlikely to meet with this one 😄

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Would a set of rock shox Indy C 63mm travel be suitable ? There’s some on eBay with new internals. Also with the mag21s do I need a specific pump and adapter to pump them up?

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Yeah, I compared the J3s to the rigid forks that I took off it and they are miles bigger. The older ones are in a bit of state and don’t move up and down freely , I unscrewed the top caps and removed the brace to see if I could see what was going on but when I saw it was filled with oil I...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

I also have these, which I took off a 1997 (I think) specialized hard rock . I have no idea what model/year they are and they are currently not working. I’m also not sure if the steerer is bent or if it is meant to be like this …

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Thanks for all the advice! im going to order a narrow wide ring, leave the bottom bracket that was in there to see how it all lines up once I’ve got it set up and get a shorter stem and wide bars. I’ve got a set of rockshox J3 forks but I’m fairly sure they are too big. This is probably a silly...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Thanks for the replies . Can anyone recommend a half decent 80mm travel fork? I see an RST delta comp 80mm travel on eBay £50 , is that any good? Also I’ve been looking for a narrow wide chainring that’ll fit the cranks I took off but not having much luck , it’s a 5 bolt - most seem to be 4. Do...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Hi, long time lurker/reader , first time poster, so please forgive me if this is in the wrong section of the forum or any other faux pas I’m committing! I started tinkering with a 1992 Marin bear valley during the first lockdown, that got me hooked and I bought a slightly worse for wear 1991...
