@FluffyChicken Any hints for servicing a 2001 marzocchi bomber? Think it’s been sitting in a garage since 2001 and feels quite stiff

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Finally finished this bike and took it out for its maiden voyage today. Started out as an Eldridge grade ended up an orange clockwork 😆 . Thanks for all your help , I learnt a lot, hopefully the next one won’t be such a struggle! Pretty happy with the build only thing I think I’m going to change...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

http://kstoerz.com/freespoke/hub/388 I think this is what it is supposed to be. At this point I’m just going to try and get my money back as it was sold as an 8/9/10 speed and what I got was a 6/7 speed with a spindle that has been lopped off. Not worth me trying to completely rebuild it haha...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Yeah you may be right. Having measured it though I now think It’s actually just a 7 speed cassette body despite being sold as 8,9,10.

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

I’m afraid i need some advice again. Is there any reason why a 10 speed cassette won’t fit on a free hub body that it is (in theory) supposed to fit on. I read that you can put a 10 speed cassette on a body that previously had 8 or 9 speed because they are all the same size. Yet when i tried to...

Or is it simple enough to fit a new spindle that is the correct length?

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

No need to apologise , I want to learn! I think this spindle may be too short for me to use on this bike, it is literally only just able to sit in the drop outs , maybe .5mm each side . And when I tried to do up the QR the wheel span very wonky , I think due to the spring on the qr being...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Turns out the axle of the rear wheel I bought from eBay is too short. A problem I wasn’t expecting 😆 . Is there a standard length for wheel axles? The spacing of the bike is 135mm and the axle thread seems to be about 139.5mm…so it’s barely hanging on . I tried a few other 26inch (7speed...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Had a change of plan and I’m now going to reassemble the marin more as it was and use this frame instead . The paint is in better nick than the Eldridge grade and being slightly newer I thought it might be more suitable

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

Oh good, I didn’t want to have to put anything else back on eBay 😅. I got a fancy schwalbe nobby nic evo tyre and a less fancy non folding but slightly wider nobby nic for the front. Also some 770mm bars and nice grips and (hopefully, if I win it on eBay) a shimano zee 1x10 drivetrain including...

Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

My next stupid question: can you put folding tyres onto an old rim? I’m reading about hooked rims and wondering if the tyre I just bought isn’t going to go on (or maybe stay on?) the Mavic x517 I have…
