Building my first bike - choosing the right components

Yes, that's the other option. The reason behind the RD-A550 is that I can pair it with a front derailleur of the same series, which is not available for the STX, as it has to be braze on

Building my first bike - choosing the right components

Would a rear derailleur made for 7 speed cassette (specifically a RDA550) have enough lateral movement to cover the width of a 8/9 speed cassette?

Do they come also for road bikes?

Building my first bike - choosing the right components

Oh definitely, the triple makes only sense to extend the range toward lower gears, not higher. A 50-11 is plenty, at least for my use. On my commuting bike I have a 46T outer, and I rarely if ever use the 46-11 combination.

Building my first bike - choosing the right components

This is a good point actually. I had a look at the crankset again, and it's marked LC M500, so I am no longer sure whether it is the same as the 500LX, or we are talking about two different cranks. I'll measure the Q factor one of these days. I never ran that crankset on any bike, it's always...

Building my first bike - choosing the right components

Oh no, I get that. I think so too. A 3x8 was just a cheaper and easier way to get low gear inches without having too wide steps on the cassette (as I am using 8 sprockets at the back). I had a 11-32 (8 speed) on my commuting bike here in London and some of the jumps (the 15-18 especially) were...

Yes, I saw that. It looks good and responds to all the requirements. I wasn't sure what to match it with at the back. That's all.

Thanks. Yes, I am becoming familiar with Shimano nomenclature.

Building my first bike - choosing the right components

Hi, I recently embarked in a new project and I decided to build a bike from scratch. The frame of choice is a steel Hewitt frame, and I would like to make it into semi-retro bike, with some modern and some retro components, hopefully without too much of a mismatch. I don't have performance in...

For Sale Marin Palisades Trail circa 1993 (turns out it's a 1990 model)

Damn, I must really sound dumb if you feel I need to be be explained what centre to centre means 😅 If the official sizes are 17.5 and 19 it's definitely 17.5, yes. Not knowing 17.5 was an official size I went with 18 as it looked closer to that than to 17. Actually, I measured it in cm as I...

I didn't really "think" the size, I more "measured" it, if you get what I mean. And yes, it's 18 inches.

    UN300 - less than 300 miles and it's toast

You know...it might. It would be hard for me to check that, but I'll have a go. The original BB was so tight that it took a 1m long extension bar on the wrench to loosen up the NDS. It was insane. Maybe that's the only way to keep it tight, although with the English thread, it shouldn't really...

    UN300 - less than 300 miles and it's toast

I have strong legs...sadly not that strong to destroy bearings in a few hundred miles 😄

    UN300 - less than 300 miles and it's toast

Brief update. I got a UN55 and fitted it in place of the UN300. Same problem. Now, I honestly cannot believe 3 different bottom brackets can all have the same issue, so sadly I am starting to think I am doing something wrong. What can be done wrong in installing a sealed cartrdige botto...

Compatibility problem bullhorns and quill stem

Hi everyone, Is it just me, or it is particularly difficult to find a stem and a bullhorn handlebar that fit? I have two bullhorn handlebars and neither slides into the stem. I could always convert the bike to a modern, two-piece, but I really like the quill stem better.
