BoTM Bike of The Month February 2023 - repaints special

Again, not sure if I ever entered this into a special. Peachy’s 1992 Claud Butler Antaeus 653 Thread; https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1992-claud-butler-antaeus-653-magnum-finished.389041/ Photo of it getting its bottom soothed after it had been bothered by both @legrandefromage & @longun...

    Holdsworth Mistral 1965

@dwscrimshaw is more your man regarding Holdsworth’s. But yes, a quality steel bike like the Mistral has every chance of being a joy to ride. And of course simple upgrades to the drive train & shifters to an indexed system can make it as simple to ride as any modern. Plus they look better.

Who else is fed up with EBay fees and withholding payments?

@jimwise68 hello Jim, I’ve just signed up as I was thinking of sticking a few bits up for grabs. I’m probably missing something but I can’t work out how to browse through everything that’s on sale, I can only make specific searches. Ps. I get it’s a place to advertise parts for free so there’s...

    Dura Ace vs XTR

One thing I would say about Sheldon’s site, the search system works about 100 times better than the one on here 🤷🏻‍♂️

Superb leather saddle repair kit that actually works!!!!!!!!

All good thanks. The only issues I’ve found are when I’ve rushed a quickie then ridden in the wet ( the lacquer came away) since then I make sure all prep is perfect and I fine sand between every very dry coat.

    Claud Butler Spectre Project

Excellent. Seat post isn’t original either if you really do decide to go down that rabbit hole 😃 (0h and check your spelling of Claud before @legrandefromage notices it 😉 )

Who do you think you are kidding Mr Butler

Today I had a long telephone conversation with the seller, Tim, about his fathers war experience. He admitted his memory from his 50’s childhood was a bit hazy (born in 1949 and looking forward to his 74th birthday this year) His dad was born in 1908 so obviously would have been a fully grown...

    Mountain mayhem 2023 cancelled

I’m a bit confused why the food/drink caterer’s are even a concern. Surely they pay the event organisers for a pitch, not the other way around?

Who do you think you are kidding Mr Butler

Thanks @dwscrimshaw I agree, thirties style but likely a forties number. So the seller has sent me more close-ups of the Sturmey Archer hub. We already know it’s an “AW” and that this was introduced in 1937 and for some unexplained reason these were never date stamped for the period 1941-1946...

Who do you think you are kidding Mr Butler

But then Claud didn’t start fillet brazing until 1937 so it’s looking less likely that it’s a war hero. 🙁

Conti drops, yes last seen in the range in 1949 27” wheels, yes post war they were more dominant but you can find plenty on offer in the mid 30’s in the Claud ranges, plus also a tall person could easily specify 27” for a bespoke build.

Who do you think you are kidding Mr Butler

Ermmm thanks for those Mark. I think? 😘 The frame certainly has a number of features that have been found on a number of Claud from immediately before, during and after the war up until the late 40’s. Which is not untypical of this mixed up period. Looking through the number archives doesn’t...
