Thanks for giving me the confidence to have a go. It was your article that sowed the seed.

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Progressing nicely.....After careful preparation and a light rub down between the two coats of primer. Thanks go to my good friend who provided the second pair of hands and the expertise. As you can see from the photos below we used my summerhouse as a paint studio which kept us out of the...

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Yes.... he made them up from my peeled off originals that were quite damaged. New ones will be applied after paint job and first coat of lacquer and before the final coat of lacquer and polish, then the careful bits refit will begin.

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Thanks for the responses from The History Man, Jamiedyer, PeachyPM and the good spraying advice from allenh. The bike when I purchased it was almost in original condition apart from a little chipped paint damage and excess thick paint where it appears to have been resprayed over original. All...

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Day Three (Paint Stripping) Repeated yesterdays action, and the frame is now stripped of its thick coating of black. I reckon it has been painted over its original coat as it was very thick, its also had a couple of coats of clear lacquer. Now just the nooks and crannies and some light steel...

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Once again my wife is not too happy, she is the gardener in the family, but hey ho! I think she is secretly glad I've now moved the frame out of the conservatory.

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

29/03/2019 Frame coming along a bit now, easier after roughing the paintwork with a wire brush then leaving the first coat of stripper for 1 hour before applying a second, leaving that for another hour before rinsing, then using the scraper and fibre cloths. It still needs another days work...

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Thanks allenh for the good advice above. I have plenty of time for this project. I will not start the respray until the days warm up,and at my present rate of progress it may take me that long to strip and rubdown the frame in preparation. I hope both your spray area and heated drying cabinet...

Just starting the next phase now first time ever 'Stripping the frame of paint before respraying' using allenh's rattlecan respray thread as a guide. I expected to make a few blunders along the way so here are the first few. Blunder 1) 27/03/2019 First blunder I put paint stripper into an old...

Raleigh Gran Sport Actually Built see P.23

To THM.... apologies for resurrecting your thread, but had to say how much I've enjoyed the members good humoured banter, and yes the bike is a real stunner. One question though. How did you train the bike in the photos on Page 27 to stand up all on its own? Mine keeps falling over no matter...

No problem here Allenh looking forward to the project you’ve promised. I will be using your Rattlecan paint thread as a guide when I have a first attempt at painting this project in the spring.

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Thanks for the last few contributions, but to bring the thread back into line. My personal view is that not everything in life has to have a financial investment value, certainly this rebuild is being done as allenh says just for the sheer joy of the experience. Some may not understand that...

    Reg Harris

Certainly has the look of the international. I had one in the mid 60’s. Mine was in Florentine Silver/Venetian Red. It was stolen after just two weeks and I had to pay my father’s HP agreement back for two years after the loss. Police were informed, but never heard anything more. Wish i’d kept...
