    Next direction for Holdsworth Mistral

Re: Re: Glad it isn't just me then! I had two shots at bolting it down and figuring out how to lock it down. Got the locking down bit down but it was such a faff to get in at the bolts I thought I'd fix the saddle angle later. Rue the day they stopped letting Victorian children with small...

Cheers Dennis - yes, first one and still learning! Have a fairly decent modern road bike and thought it was a bit ridiculous that I didn't know how to maintain some bits or was reluctant to make adjustments, so this exercise has been quite good as regards learning about mechanics and giving a...

Re: Re: Cheers William, much appreciated. Brakes are Gran-Compe. Have attached some pics from when I was stripping the bike down and cleaning it. I'll see if I can get a decent shot of the decals / font for the next update. Though, I reckon it won't matter as seen from a distance it would...

Re: Re: Thanks Jon, no issue with the feedback, it's fine Don't know if you saw the earlier posts, but project was originally to learn a bit about bike mechanics primarily and take a first attempt at a restoration. If by modern twist, you mean the wheels, then they're not supposed to be...

Hi all, Quick update - Had a bit of a road test. Need to add the mudguards and touring rack. And still working on the rim / tyre conundrum, so the modern ones are on for the time being. Some Before After pics below. Shout if you see anything that just isn't the done thing. Thanks MM

    Identify a Dawes?

Re: Identify a Dawes? - Clansman / Tartan Tourist 1956 Thanks! After a small bit of scrubbing and a lot of squinting (the cranks are in surprisingly good nick once the muck is taken off), the tiny Williams "hallmark" puts them at 1956! Much appreciated! Tried the acetone but it wasn't...

    Identify a Dawes?

Thanks folks, Followed both bits of advice and stumbled upon a couple of things. A bit of googling on the Dominant led me to a copy of the 1955 catalogue, which I glanced at but set to one side as I was being led by the post-1965 derailleur. Though the frames and set-up looked similar. Then...

    Identify a Dawes?

Hi folks While on the hunt for parts for my Holdsworth, much to the delight of my other half, I acquired an old Dawes. I thought I might be able to use the mudguards, brakes & brake calipers and the saddle (B15 Brooks) for the Holdsworth (reckoned it was worth a punt for £ 25, given the cost of...

Hi folks Have been offline for a while, but have got a bit of an update for you. Have made some progress. Also have hit a couple of stumbling blocks, but I'm not going to get too hung up on them just yet. On the plus side, bike has a new coat & decals and it has come out really nicely. Have...

Mavic Module 3 CD rims - 630/27 inch - vs. Schwalbe tyres

Re: Thanks Hamster Yes, pretty sure - Measure Twice, Cut Once as a wise old joiner once said. I did it a few times and a couple of different ways. Diameter was landing in the high 630's. It was my first thought when I found they weren't fitting. I have some 700's in the shed and tried to fit...

Mavic Module 3 CD rims - 630/27 inch - vs. Schwalbe tyres

Hi folks I've 630 Mavic Module 3 rims on the Holdsworth Mistral that I am doing up at the moment. Have searched but cannot find the official size / width etc for the rims. Have some Schwalbe 27 x 1 1/4 / 630 28-32 tyres for it, but they seem to be miles too big for the rims. I can't get...

Planet X... retro Holdsworth kit marked down

Don't know if this is the right place to post it, I mentioned in a different thread that Planet X have marked down their Holdsworth kit this weekend... jerseys £ 13, beanies, other branded stuff. Quite decent discounts too given some of them are Merino. Might be of interest given the season...

Re: Cheers Tim, that looks ace! Lovely seeing it in fully touring mode. The night I picked it up, I emailed the guy I bought it from to say thanks and told him that I wanted a bike to do up, learn a bit about mechanics on and then maybe (maybe) do the north coast 500 on next summer. He...

Re: Thanks folks The Killgarrif pages are superb. 1982 catalogue spec has Suntour Cyclone, I happen to have some with manuf date stamps for 1981. It's a start..! Will see if I can do some digging on stem, bars and brake levers, so if anybody has any suggestions do let me know. Thanks again...

Hi folks Am attempting my first refurb - well, it's more to learn a bit more about mechanics than refurbing, but while I'm at it, I might add a few bits and maybe spruce up the bike a little bit. Bike's a Holdsworth Mistral. I've dated it to 1980 and I got it for £ 25 a couple of weeks back...
