    Dawes Galaxy

Went out on the Galaxy yesterday, wasn't sure about it after a short 5 minutes test ride before and thought I'd have to sell it. My fears were unfounded, it rides superbly. Light and responsive, the non indexed gears changed smoothly. Yes it is a tad too big, but because of my body to leg...

Replaced the plastic cable clips with stainless steel ones, tan wall tyre to replace the black wall. Took it to a qualified bike mechanic to get it checked because I suspected the rear derailleur hanger was bent and I couldn't get it to shift properly. He had the Park Tool which confirmed it...

    A Classic Mistake?

I've had this for a couple of years now. Apart from putting it on a turbo trainer for a laugh I haven't ridden it. That changed this Tuesday. It actually rides rather nice.

Finally finished. Just needs a saddle change and shakedown ride.

    A Classic Mistake?

Still got it. Replaced the Lee Chi plastic cantis with Shimano Altus from the spare box. The pleather bouncy saddle probably won't stay though. It's helping me get ride ready on a donated turbo trainer now.

Started the re-assembly today. Also had a go at lug lining with questionable results.

1980s Dawes Galaxy Brown paint match.

For future reference Ford Roman Bronze is a good match.

1980s Dawes Galaxy Brown paint match.

I saw online Ford Chestnut Brown was a good match for 1980s Dawes Dark Brown metallic. As you can see it isn't, it's too red. Anyone know the correct colour?

    Sold German Heidemann frame £10

German Heidemann 22" frame and forks. I bought it for the wheels and a couple of other bits. Seems a shame to take it down the tip. Would make a good Hipster single speed, fixie or Pub bike. £10 ono Collection only from Southampton.

Got this, I bought for the wheels and stem. Weighs a ton so maybe not. Make a good fixie or boat anchor.🤣

The one slight fly in the ointment is it's a 22.5 frame. I'm 5'9" with a 29" inside leg. Just put the forks and wheels on. The standover is a little bit er... snug.

My wife tells me I can be a stubborn bugger so I went back to it. The Caustic had thinned the post enough that I was able I hammer and twist it out with brute force and ignorance. There's still 6cm of post left down there but it's very thin and there's plenty of room for another post so I...

    Dawes Galaxy

The post is at least half way down the seat tube. I suspect it's also too big and been forced in. Why they replaced the original is a mystery. I've walked away for now. I have used Caustic before and vowed never to do it again, nasty stuff and not exactly eco friendly. Cutting a slot is a...

    Dawes Galaxy

Reached a bit of an impasse with the Galaxy. The seatpost is still firmly stuck. I've heated it, frozen it, soaked it, hit it, swore at it and it refuses to move. In the end I resorted to Caustic Soda. The problem is the replacement post fitted is so long and thick that so far it hasn't made...

Sorted Sakae Ringyo SP 100 pedal dust cap wanted.

Problem fixed bought a set of SR SP-150 pedals. The caps are nylon plastic but should be okay with a bit of silver paint.

Sorted Sakae Ringyo SP 100 pedal dust cap wanted.

The MKS cap has arrived. It's 1mm too big! So still need a dust cap. Doesn't have to match but must be 21mm. Same thread and size of a SR crank dust cap.

Today has been a day of small victories. As well as a stuck seatpost the allen bolt on the saddle clamp was rounded so I couldn't remove the saddle. In the end I managed to cut a slot in it with a Dremmel. The bolt was also seized which explains why the bolt was rounded. Used a large...

Spent the afternoon cleaning and refurbishing parts. Looks like the previous owner upgraded the brake blocks. Just waiting for the new straddle cables to arrive.
