1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Re: Re: Ahh ok - thanks for the heads up. I'll go searching later. There's a little bit of life in the pads I have but nice to know there may be an alternative. The pads I have are Fibrax and not the original Resilion marked pads so maybe there are some NOS pads still floating around out...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Re: Re: Nice one - probably one of the originals then looking at the dates. Shame the others don't match! Ha! Yeah, seems a shame to buy a bike to rob it of bits. Pleased to have the brakeset now though - proper quirky design although I'm not sure its possible to get replacement brake...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

I've gone and bought a donor tandem.....3rd tandem in as many weeks, 2 of them from the Brighton area.......drove down there this morning to collect. I must be mad. Anyway - I spotted this ad many weeks ago - and especially noticed the Resilion brakes which are quite a big missing piece on my...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Stripped the tandem down and have given everything a good degrease and clean - lots of thick greasy oily deposits on everything....which seems to have saved some of the chrome but the Nickel plating is a bit tired. Found some evidence of presumably the original colour though.......flam green...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

It was a bit of faff......I've recovered a few Flites using leather - this was a first time using suede.....there are a few issues I'm not happy with but it's a million times better than it was and now usable so all good. Bit more detail added - should've taken some more pics!

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Bit of progress......bought an offcut of "Dark Blue" pigskin suede off eBay to cover the Tornado. Sat it in my watch list and a few days later got an offer of £4.50 from the seller. Took a punt as it looked like black in the ad and sure enough its black enough for me. 0.6mm thick too so nice...

Claud Butler 1936 Silver Ace (probably) tandem

I hear what you're saying - I've just arranged to buy another tandem as a donor for the missing bits I need (mainly the Resilion brakes). What other bits do you need now? Looking grand by the way - loving the colour choice. :)

Claud Butler 1936 Silver Ace (probably) tandem

Love this. Checking in for updates having just baggsied a Claud Tandem myself. Interested to see where you go with it....... :)

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

So glad to have actually managed to bag it - after missing it the first time. Yep - that's nana & grandad on a day trip to the coast. Possibly Felixstowe (was a favourite haunt apparently) and probably mid to late thirties as they hadn't got kids there and grandad went off to war in 1941...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Oh yeah! Stripped it to bare frame last night - no dramas so far. Not sure where to go with the frame yet. Getting the old plating stripped and re-chromed I'm guessing will require a re-mortgage to pay for it.......will make some enquiries though to find out how scary that price may be. 'tis...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

A couple of months ago I spotted an advert for a tired looking Claud Butler tandem for a reasonable price. Sorely tempted I managed to talk myself out of it and it sold really quickly. Fast forward to Friday night, perusing the fb adverts and the very same bike turned up, this time on the...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Cheers guys. Got a spare heron sticker for one of my Raleigh roadsters then! One other thing I noticed in fitting them is the "gran sport" script at the top of the seat tube is too big on mine.

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Re: Re: Yeah it's better than I first thought - not quite as faded as the title of my thread suggests! On your GS have you got this sticker anywhere? Wasn't sure where to put it as there was no evidence of it on my frame. The sticker kit also had a Heron badge sticker (like the headbadge) -...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Be interesting to see how they turn out - I'll keep an eye out for your Colstar build getting updated! Ta! Pleased with it so far. I have toyed with the idea of just spending £35 to see what they can do for the money. The forks are so bad that anything will be an improvement......whats the...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Re: Re: Yeah the frame has responded well to a good cut and polish and a set of stickers. I attempted a colour match using some Tamiya paints that I have and managed to get a reasonable match on areas that aren't so obvious (around the seat clamp bolt etc) - but any chips on the tubing stand...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Chucked some stickers at the ole girl over the weekend............ Wasn't sure where to put this one.....this seemed like a good place - and it covers up a couple of paint chips. One last big hurdle to overcome....chroming the forks. They are terrible and need refinishing, but...

    1975 Claud Butler Electron - 531

Were you a regular visitor to Shoebury common / Thorpe Bay at some point then Chris? Nice place to go and park up and have a cuppa and a stroll on the beach for sure (or photograph bikes....whatever takes your fancy.) Absolutely made up to win RBoTM with this...........and I've done nothing...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Looks like good stuff that - my boss used something similar on the steering wheel in his classic Saab and recommended it. I think I want to change material though - thinking a different finish like suede or alcantara........undecided as yet. (but I think brown suede will edge it......) Good...

The faded Caramel beast......'82 Raleigh Gran Sport

Not a lot of progress of late.....been too busy with other stuff. Did buy a saddle though.......cropped up on a Raleigh resto facebook page as a link to an eBay ad. Took a punt on it as its an Iscaselle and it looked very similar to the Tornado saddle - bought just to rob it for its foam...
