1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Cool - Peachy's bought a tandem! You'll more than likely have yours done and sold on again by the time mines finished at this rate. I have dug out my spray gun and bought some 2 pack etch primer......but that's not a lot to show for 6 months since I last looked at the project! Still over...

Sold 1979/1980 Claud Butler Majestique, Reynolds 531, 10 speed in very good original condition

Asking price and selling price are two very different things though........notice you're in London where the prices seem to be a lot higher for bikes so who knows. Good luck with the sale.

Sold 1979/1980 Claud Butler Majestique, Reynolds 531, 10 speed in very good original condition

For reference I just sold mine - in slightly less original condition (non-original saddle and stem) - but all in good order - advertised on eBay at £150 and eventually took an offer for £120. Had about 15 watchers and took a while to sell at that price.

    '51 Maclean Featherweight

Few bits and pieces done to the Maclean over the last few weeks. Nickel plated a few bits to tidy them up.....bottom bracket cups and seat pin bolt. Fitted a set of williams cranks that I have in the spares box - as a stop-gap until the originals are re-chromed as they are properly rusty...

    '51 Maclean Featherweight

Yeah that is a nicely finished example. The frame whip concept is quite interesting...... https://forums.thepaceline.net/archive/index.php/t-217010.html No respray planned just yet. Just going to tidy up, service and ride for now. In the long term it probably deserves a refinish...

    Maclean's Featherweight - Mid 40s

Holy moly......you've got some spares then! I think I saw this job lot on eBay fairly recently? Good luck finding something to fit the rears - I fitted the set that I plated for my tandem on the front of my MacLean and they fitted with no packing but the rear stays are so thin I reckon they...

    '51 Maclean Featherweight

So with the bike stripped down to the bare frame (including removing the drive side BB cup) I decided to weigh both frame and forks as a record..... Frame is a comparable weight to my 1950 Claud Butler Avant Courier - and that is 531 butted tubing. Not a bad weight for a reasonably large 70...

    Maclean's Featherweight - Mid 40s

Lovely work - great bike. What do you think to the Resilion brake? I was surprised how good they were when I took my Maclean out for its first ride last week. With regards to fitment issues - the rears on mine were packed out with rubber under the clamps. I've removed them as part of the...

    '51 Maclean Featherweight

Love this. Was it in Benfleet, Essex? 😂 I love the idea that someone had cherished this bike right up until the day he could no longer ride it. It's certainly not been neglected and is in good order - although after stripping it down last night to give it a good clean and service it's possible...

    '51 Maclean Featherweight

Found a few hours free last week so started reworking the MacLean to a less touring type spec. Replaced the wheels with a set of aluminium rims that I have - airlite large flange rear flip-flop hub and a campagnolo small flange front hub. Carefully removed the Blumels mudguards and stored them...

    '51 Maclean Featherweight

A few weeks ago I had a message from a friend with a link to a fb marketplace advert for a MacLean Featherweight "Barn Find" that happened to be fairly local to me. I love it and hate it when this happens in equal measure......as I usually love the bikes that I get sent links to but it usually...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Yep, Decs are long gone, I'm feeling less like a Christmas recluse now which is good (we tend to hide away from the world over Xmas and eat lots of chocolate, even moreso this year) so will be back on this in the next few weeks. Will be digging the spray gun out of the shed at the weekend and...

RBotM November 2020 - Tandems !!!!!! Poll Now Up!! VOTE NOW!

Oh wow, nice one - cheers guys. It's certainly a lovely machine.....looking forward to getting on the road, hopefully I can do it justice! Painting and boxlining is in the pipeline......nice to learn something new every now and again right? Cheers Chris, kind words indeed. Lots of inspiring...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

First attempt at soldering cables and degreasing didn't seem to cause an issue - cleaned everything with acetone prior to soldering and used the appropriate flux. As you say - may be because it's a higher heat that means it's not a problem. Successfully crimped and soldered the y-joint and...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Silver solder (or sodder for our american friends!) has turned up so I've had a play with it after work this week in an attempt to actually get one of the Resilion cable forms finished. I started by re-soldering the nipples at the caliper end - feels like this is the most logical place to...

1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase Tandem

Ha! Not sure I really have space for this one to be honest.....not sure where it's going when its fully built up that's for sure. Yeah the plating has been a bit of a revelation - nice to know I've now got a method to protect all those smaller parts that get cleaned up in a resto.....nuts...

    RBotM November 2020 - Theme - Tandems !!!!!!

So I'll chuck an entry in for this - even though my tandem project is progressing at a glacial pace and is essentially a box of bits at this point in time. Obvs if this is bending the RBotM rules a little too much then no worries. 1939 Claud Butler Ultra Shortbase.... As bought: 6 spd...
