I put a 1x9 on set up on a Buck Shaver for my girl friend this summer. She rode the bike all season, all off road, and never had any issues. ENO front, SRAM XO out back w/ short cage and I ran the chain as short as possible to keep the slop to a minimum.

Great points made by all. I think when it comes down the the Somerville Fats your looking at collectability as the original Fat City, nostagia, soul... intangibles only each collector feels and is willing to pay for. I'd have to say the NY Fat's are closer to the Somerville bikes then a new IF...
