    XC pro thumbies

The advent of 8speed did coincide with the introduction of Microdrive by Suntour (later copied and sold as "compact drive" in Shimano language). An 11 tooth sprocket was necessary to get the same drive capacity as the traditional gears having chainrings up to 48 teeth.

    Sachs Maillard Freewheel Removal Tool

Every older and established LBS (local bike store) with a workshop should have the appropriate tool. Maybe five or ten bucks in the savings box and you probably should have the opportunity to use that tool.

    What grease ?

I bought a 500 ml DT Swiss Motorex grease tube in 2000 (yellow translucent stuff). It lasts til today. I use it for all my purposes including my Dualco grease gun in order to re-grease my XC Pro GG components.

I´m interested in the Speci BX23 rims, 32 or 36 holes? Is shipping to Germany possible and how expensive would that be? Cheers, Patrick

    BikePro website has gone...?

I experienced the usual server hick up several times over the past few years. But this time the error message has gone and some start page is loaded that surprisingly looks like the domain has been taken over by someone else. What i also noticed some days ago: on every page a telephone hot line...

Removal of a suntour xc pro cassette??

Is that a rubber seal between axle and lockring? If so it´s definitely an MD freehub. I also think that someone opened the 11tooth-12tooth lockring by accident and then installed it the wrong way.

What is your favourite year MTB's were manufactured?

ca. 1987 - 1993. Some reasons: occurrence of index shifting, "exotic" brakes like Rollercams or U-brakes, brilliant paint jobs, straightforward frames and components (the 1995 XTR with it´s parallax hubs look horrific to me).... ....oh and most important; SunTour still in business. :D

    Cannondale 19????

Sorry for misjudging the cable stops but regarding the decals it´s most likely a repaint. "Cannondale" decals went to the downtube in 1991, earlier models have them on the top tube. Is there a decal on the seat tubes?

    Cannondale 19????

Judging from the decals and cable routing this is a 1991 model ("canny" decal on downtube, cable routing on top tube with welded cable stops not plastic guides). But what really itches me is that in 1991 there wasn´t a single model with U-Brake/Rollercam socket. Sure, it´s not a repainted...

Who has owned their Retrobike from new?

@ danson67: Lovely bike! I like those Rollercam-only bikes from the eighties a lot! :D My two bikes bought in 1991: Specialized HardRock Cannondale SM 2000

what kind of brakes are these? Thanks!

BTW, this is NOT a joke. Cut off a little splinter with a pocket knife and try to ignite it with a lighter. If it burns it is Magnesium.

    Is This a Pepperoni?

Same over here. It´s the typical shape i´ve cleaned so often with cloth and paper towels over the years when i came home from a ride

Show us (your) 80's mountain bikes !

My most recent acquisition; 1988 Specialized 21.5" RockHopper comp in very good condition, no dings, no huge scratches, just a few minor paint chips at the usual spots. :D Unfortunately the badges show serious fading of the neon colour. I will restore and rebuild it.

    U brake replacement suggestions

Get some XCD or XC Sport roller cams off the bay or from online bicycle parts dealers. I currently build up an 1988 RockHopper and i´m thinking about using a roller cam instead of the original U-brake

    Specialized Stumpjumper Comp - 1989

One question out of curiousity: is the paint a pure black or are there some metal flakes or other effectual pigments combined with a black basis lacquer? (like Specialized did with many other paint schemes)

    Show us your Specialized

Thanks a lot! They were aluminum ones with their last "flesh on their bones". I´ve replaced them with Tacx Delrin (plastics) ones with cartridge bearings a few days ago. My latest acquisition (came this afternoon), it needs some minor cosmetique touch up but the decals are all undamaged.
