Cheap (compared to UK) Schwalbe Almotion "super slicks"

The Almotion is Schwalbe's new top-of-the-line fast-but-wide tyre, going in above the Marathon Supreme (a long term darling of the CTC set.) It's supposed to keep all the good parts of the Supreme (speed combined with durability, protection and grip) but to be even faster and a somewhat decent...

    95 Trek 850 Mountain Track

Treks seem like they tend to get overlooked in favour of some other brands and so there are some real bargains. Might be useful: http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/Bike ... &model=850

    Which BMX to buy

I'd suggest the generic "When in doubt between two bikes, check ebay to see if anyone is selling a barely used example of either - you can often save 30-60% of the new price this way and get a bike that only has a few weeks wear on it." And check for the couple of models that you can't afford...

    My handmade leather craft.

However, as brilliant as your leatherwork is, as a stem designer you frankly suck. Are you thinking of doing the leather commercially? There's definitely a market, although you would be competing against several big names so you'd need to come up with angle. (Don't go with lower price - people...

    Rumour mill...Fat City :-o

Re: Re: This is probably true; 26s steer better, but steering is a skill. Lower quality CF frames are very cheap from the research I've done - something like carbon Sirrus may have a lower frame cost than the alu models beneath it! But there are good reasons why team bikes aren't made out...

    lost for words

This isn't as silly as it looks; it was obviously made to take a pillion passenger - it's a bicycle seat made for two!

    What bike's this anyone?

Re: Re: Disappointingly, the answer is to put it on ebay with a low starting price. Like £20. At most. A Tufftrax in A+ condition isn't worth much more than £100 (see eg viewtopic.php?t=127750) and this bike is not in A+ condition. There's a Tufftrax on ebay now finishing in a day's time (in...

    The u-brake is b-a-c-k (and it's mad!)

A cynic would say that the UCI want there to be as many types of bicycle subspecies as possible to increase sales. A disc frame that mamils could tour on and use for cross, winter training and road racing without embarrassment could be several sales lost.

Help a newbie buy a bike

It's an argument being made by ME. Based on reading papers and tests on bike handling and efficiency. The best all-round (ie fast commute speed, reasonable handling on light trail) readily available tyre is a low hysteresis 50-60mm slick or semi-slick for a 26" wheel. (References to various...

Nope. You never size for different people by using height. Standover can vary by several inches and so can reach. (I'm 5'10 and I have his standover height and I ride a 17"; a 19" would definitely be painful for me.) So you are suggesting that he ride exactly the size that didn't work for him...

Help a newbie buy a bike

I'm not a great sentimentalist and don't seek out the bikes I had then or those that I wanted. I can make a serious, science-based case for the rigid mtbs of the early 90s to be the best general purpose bikes ever built, especially now that wide fast tyres are available. And maybe fitted with...

Best way to send a MTB from UK to France ?

Re: Re: P2Go is excellent: it's sort of like an ebay search for delivery services. Just remember to insure whatever you send.

    The extremist fringe

Re: Re: Also, I think Shark was making fun of the TV guy when he claimed his bike weighed 65lbs. Roy, otoh, who used to push a Schwin, very possibly.

Help a newbie buy a bike

Re: If you're going to join your local bike club and you're not going to ride off road, then a mountain bike is probably a strange choice. Most people will be riding rather faster road bikes (as in drophandle, Tour De France looking things) when on the road and you'll just drop behind. You...

    The extremist fringe

However dedicated a retrobiker you think you are, this guy has you beat. At least he does if you're not not Jacqui Phelan. For he has been a bike messenger for over 30 years and used the same bike all that time. That's 60,000 hours racked up on one frame by my calculation. Maybe even the same...

    The u-brake is b-a-c-k (and it's mad!)

    The u-brake is b-a-c-k (and it's mad!)

Re: Re: I think tyre clearance is involved too. Road racers seem to be aware that they need wider rubber - 25mm even for smooth roads runnin in peletons, and wider again on cobbles or running solo. As for discs on road racers, I have to ask "Why?" It's hard to see the advantage. Even if the...

98 GT Karakoram (Reynolds 525) - broken chainstay - HELP!

GT had a great rep for quality. If you produced as many bikes as they did, then you are bound to make a mistake one some model - and as it was your K'm lasted decades. If liked the bike as you seem to, then why not seletc one of the especially well-regarded and bullet-proof GT models? There's at...
