    Facepalm components

I've been going a bit crazy trying to work out what size middle chainring an old Alivio crankset needed, then crazier trying to work out how the ring was held on... Then I began to have a suspicion, but I didn't dare believe it until I googled... the rings are riveted together so you can only...

Still, there are much worse people than the Scots - like Southerners, Geordies, people from Wigan, golfers (although there is some overlap there), BMW drivers, SUV drivers, fanatical Star Wars fans, reality TV watchers - and, oh yes, people who ride Carreras. The bastards!

Cheap (compared to UK) Schwalbe Almotion "super slicks"

Re: I got 2.15s and I shall be out on them as soon as my headset spares get here. For now all I can say that is that they're especially nice smelling rubber - just a hint of vanilla there, I think...

Do I have a geometry problem?

Re: The best article I've ever seen on bike fit is this one by Keith Bontrager: http://sheldonbrown.com/kops.html ..and it is mostly about getting fire/aft saddle placement right. A whacky thought: if the the bike is too small that actually makes it ideal for a drop bar conversion.

I excel at two things: googling and avoiding spend money. Tubeless is a win whatever you do - fewer punctures, can run lower pressure, and you lose the rolling resistance that comes from friction between the tube and tyre. Just remember that for cycling on gravel etc that fat is faster if tyre...

    The extremist fringe

Cheap drugs are one of the perks on the msr biz, especially in SF. Still less do any riding of interest: I was looking forwards to watching Hammond do one of those long SF descents followed by working rush hour. And possibly you are entirely a snob? No one is "a bum" if he pays his own bills...

    New bike New discipline, cyclocross.

Re: Re: Having ridden both a decent crosser and MTB on the same trails, no. It was pure rider assuming that the MTB is a decent bike and set-up for speed rather than as an offroad comfort bike. The guy was just much, much better than you - which you'd expect if you're not an MTB racer, because...

    Adventure Bike?

Re: Re: All things being equal, that probably won't work. 29ers have better roll over roots and rocks because of the tyre approach angle, but that's MTB stuff and not where an adventure bike belongs - any tyre has enough rollover for gravel. On road and gravel, wheel diameter is a small...

    Scottish IndepenDENce YES or NO?

Re: Scottish Indepence YES or NO? I'm sorry: I can't see any intelligence behind your arguments. You are claiming that because someone has made a threat they can't mean it- but this is inherently ludicrous. "That copper says he'll shoot me if I don't put the shotgun down - that means I'm...

Re: Scottish Indepence YES or NO? Decimilisation did not establish a new national currency. I probably can't explain how different it was to doing so to you if you can make this mistake, but it's like comparing "I can paint my car" with "I can make a new car out of paint!"

Re: Scottish Indepence YES or NO? Right. Because the paper the Treaty Of Brussels is written on would catch fire. Because... it was cursed by wizards! Nope. The EU can admit countries wherever it likes and "Europe" is extremely arbitrary concept. Whether countries get admitted or not depends...

Re: Scottish Indepence YES or NO? ..That said my vote is for Yes, because if a bunch of people want to do something desperately stupid then continually bribing them not to is unfair to everyone else.

Re: Scottish Indepence YES or NO? But even worse for EU membership, there is no way for Scotland to have a stable currency without a monetary union with England - which it has been refused. (And probably wouldn't work anyway: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-s ... s-27325253) Before the...

    Scottish IndepenDENce YES or NO?

Re: Scottish Indepence YES or NO? This is, to be polite, very, very, VERY silly indeed. Because 1. None of those applicants would form a precedent for, say, the Basques 2. People don't make those formal applications UNTIL SUCCESS IS GUARANTEED. Israel, Turkey and the Ukraine would love to...

    Adventure Bike?

Oh - and if you are buying a GPS, then for UK conditions you probably want to check receiver sensitivity carefully: some jam much more easily than others in tight valleys and with tree cover. The cheap mapless eTrex H is supposed to be especially good at resisting this.

My first thought is that you should put Mary bars, Almotions and and a rigid fork on the old mtb of your choice and save a grand. But if there's an actual difference between this and adventure bike that you can explain, I'm definitely interested.

    Fast hybrid opinions ?

Oh - and the 650B boutique tourers are also low trail, because this gives them better handling with a load over the front wheel. They're a return to traditional French tourer design, so very retro - except for having brifters (and sometimes these aren't fitted) you can't tell the new $4000 bikes...
