Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

Wheel Energy's tests may well be junk - roll tests, which do measure real world RR, diverge significantly from the rolling drum tests WE use. And, as usual, Bike Radar is cretinous. Theory says that a 29er should roll better than a 26 - but it also says that the **size** of the difference...

And how many of these high-end bikes have you seen to conclude that we're in danger of being over-run with Carbon Bling??? Or the Titanium Peril, or whatever? My own suspicion is that the results I get from snooping bike sales sites using "popularity" first like this...

Do we, in reality, have any idea how much "enthusiasts" typically spend? Aren't the people who pay an extra £200 for a Murray-designed Voodoo instead of a Carrera at Halfords "enthusiasts"? I think that like an earlier poster you maybe confusing the magazines and BikeRadar with reality.

Re: The 'That will never sell in the current climate' sale I'll take the chainset. What do we do now? You'll PM with an address to use for paypal? (First time I've bought anything here.)

Re: Re: "Acclaimed" is correct: the Mondrakers look like the bicycle version of the Dropship from Aliens. This is a great look to sell MTBs.

Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

Re: Re: If you over pump the tyres on both bike sizes than the 29er may well feel better because of the longer wheel base - it will be the only thing left smoothing out bumps. The interesting question is how a 26 would feel if it was built with the same wheelbase as a 29. People build bikes...

It's worse than that. If you look at equivalent bikes, a £700 Voodoo has a half decent suspension fork and thoroughly decent brakes. Like for like, bikes have got much cheaper. Yes, a good CF full-suspension bike with cost more than a cromoly hardtail did in 1990 - but no one is going to make...

Well, if you're going to find secret writing on a frame then "Dan Duffy" is much nicer to find anything in Latin with weird astrological symbols - or references to the Necronomicon. I had one of these as a kid too! Great paintjob - same as mine I think - but my memory is that the bars and...

Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

I think most people believe that the wheels store a significant amount of energy as flywheels, but this isn't true. If your and your bike weigh 100kg and the wheels and tyres are 2kg of this, then at most they'll store about 4% of total energy. And 29er wheels only store perhaps 25% more energy...

Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

So. Back to 29er geometry. I'm fairly sure, looking at the attack angle, that increased rollover based simply on wheel size can't explain what I'd call reasonably credible reports of the differences. Which shouldn't be surprising as all bicycle stability and cornering traits are the products of...

Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

Saying that reported experience may not be accurate and that it could be altered by the placebo effect or otherwise misleading is not "rude" and still less ignorant. It is simply facing reality. See eg That's how powerful the placebo effect is. Reading back I can't find anything objectionable...

Re: Re: My very strong belief is that "overlooked" is correct (possibly with a little exaggeration too.) And that arguments based on "You have to believe exactly what I say or you are dissing me!" really have no place anywhere.

Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

Re: Re: People believe stupider things for much longer all the time, so "It's insulting" shouldn't really affect the argument - hifi forums are full of idiots convinced that $2000 amps that sound the same as $100 in blind tests are worth paying for, not to mention "power conditioners" and...

Just built a 29'er. Will I ever ride on 26" wheels again?

Re: Re: The problem you are up against here is that bicycle physics is seriously complicated, especially the physics of stability and steering. You can't evaluate bikes using numbers unless you understand the relevant physics, and even experiments can be tricky without and adequate theoretical...

Not everyone rides Zaskar equivalents now. You can still find modern bikes at inflation adjusted BITD prices or a lot less. Which is meaningless until you say what year this was and adjust for inflation. But I'm sure that it is more than the £600 a Joe Murray designed Voodoo Bizango will cost...

Weren't Zaskars about $2000 back in the early 90s? My memory is this was a fair bit of money at the time. You got old. (Which also explains the unrealistic delusion that BITD mountain bikes were cheap.)

Fantastic mid-80's Saracen Conquest project. Be quick!

Like they were taken off one of the currently fashionable low-trail 650b "French" rando bikes. The seller should put dropbars and a string of onions on it - some idiot in North California would bid a fortune for it.
