1993 Raleigh Peak - Restored and been on maiden voyage!

really liking that. Completely agree with you on old vs new. I'm quicker too on my new bike, but some days there's nothing like taking the old steel out on the bumpy stuff :-) It definitely sharpens the mind! cheers John

Pinarello Rombo 1991 (I think) ... advice needed

ok, so I was not going to buy another bike, but browing through marktplaats again and saw something a bit retro. Just 50 euro in the end, and a couple of km down the road, so why not? Not sure much about the history of this one, but I really like the early 90s large diamater aluminium tubing...

    Raleigh Skyhawk

been a while, but I did finish off tidying up the old Raleigh a couple of months ago. In the end I settled on just a good thorough service. Full strip down, regrease, new cable inners/outers, plus a nice new set of tyres. Quite pleased with the result in the end. Up to now I've just been using...

    headset drama ...

Hi xerxes it is the bottom of the head tube, but there are three races (the one you see on the picture is not the crown race). The crown race is mounted back on the fork, but there are two additional races that mount in to the cups (one of which you see on the picture). As pointed out by a...

    headset drama ...

Hi Jimo I don't think so. I think a sealed bearing is usually a separate unit that just sits between the cup and race (??), so the sealed bearing can be replaced separately from the headset. In this case it is not a sealed unit, but the race does clip in to the cup. I initially stripped this...

    headset drama ...

I'm currently putting an old Giant hybrid/city bike together for my son (suspect mid/late 90s) to use as a school bike. It's got a 1 inch threaded headset. After powder coating the frame so it looks nice and new, I got the pressed cups back in with no problem (bought a headset press from CRC)...

    Restoring to admire not ride.

For me it just boils down to doing whatever turns you on. My small (but expanding) collection is just built so I can ride. I like the idea of waking up on a Sunday morning, walking in to the garage and thinking "hmmm, what shall I ride today?". My limited skill set (getting better) means...
