The new rims set it off nicely. That's a quality build Martin, well done.

Dawes Galaxy - Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly

I wouldn't use hammerite for a bicycle frame. It tends to be a relatively thick coating and can take weeks to cure properly. Kurust, followed by etch primer and rattle can finish would work. Or if you don't want all the prep effort, a wrinkle finish paint can look good in an industrial kind of way.

BINGO! They do a vintage Modolo fit that looks promising. Thanks. 8)

french headset and swiss bottom bracket assistance

Velo Orange do a nice French threaded headset. It's decent quality and doesn't look out of place on older frames.

Ye olde stylee brake blocks - what's avaulable these days

Thanks but I actually want to keep the original shoes and replace the friction material so need blocks that slide into the old shoes. Edit to add: Most of the modern shoes won't fit the SSC callipers properly, the bolts are too wide and long.

Ye olde stylee brake blocks - what's avaulable these days

Is it still possible to source good quality brake blocks for 80s / 90s brake shoes? I'd like to fit some decent new friction material into the original brake shoes of my Mavic SSC calipers. The originals are rock hard (fossilised :D ) and therefore useless for a bike that actually gets used...

    1990 R.M.O. Gitane FINISHED! 9th May

Re: 1990 Histor/RMO Gitane, nearly finished, 27th April Looks fantastic. And yes, those Modolo / Mavic hoods are an utter pig for a bar wrap.

Dawes Galaxy - Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly

I think I'd try a Mavic 600 series bottom bracket in this situation. It's probably your best bet at distributing the load away from the damaged area.

Haral Chambery - Updated - Mavic ZAP gears

That's rather special. :) How do the Zaps work in practice? I seem to remember them being regarded as a tad unreliable and fragile BITD.

    Vitus 979 Build - Revisited

Re: Re: Thanks for the kind comments. 8) AFAIK the brakes were actually made by Modolo (SLK) but were rebranded for use in both the Mavic SSC and Sachs New Success groups. So there's at least three variations. I think there were minor differences, eg: brake shoes.

    Vitus 979 Build - Revisited

Hi Julian, I used a French threaded Velo Orange headset to suit my forks. However, some frames have French threads and some have English threads. You can tell which you need as the French threads have a flat section at the rear of the threads to locate the washer while English threads have a...
