Anyone know what this beauty is?

Re: OK, so I can't give any help on the bike itself, but my dad knew Bill Oldham well. In fact, he used to spray and bake the frames for them in the 50s, in the big oven at the Geigy Chemical Company, where he worked... So, your frame may well have been sprayed by my dad. Bill was also an AA...

Anyone know what this beauty is?

Re: Lovely. I wonder if he was in Middleton CC or Manchester Wheelers. I'll ask father if he remembers any bike shop of that name in Middleton. Before my time, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't there by the late 70s.

Anyone know what this beauty is?

Re: I believe it says "Supplied by W. Oldham, Oldham Road, Middleton, Manchester". I grew up just off Oldham Road (in the 70s, early 80s) but I don't remember any W. Oldham. Neil Orrell and Gerry Shields were two local bike shops near Oldham Road. Neither strictly in Middleton, and I don't...

    Raleigh Equipe Malliard Freewheel

Recently stripped down one very like this. First two sprockets screwed off as described by Jonny69 and the rest were splined and slid off. However, there is no good non-destructive reason for doing it. You're very unlikely to find any replacement sprockets these days -- as said it is a...

Suntour Superbe (Pro) long drop brake calipers

Re: Hi Joe, How long is long? I have two pairs of Superbe calipers, one with "4000" on the rear of the arms, and one with 4700. The latter have a longer reach (ca. 47-57mm, I think) than the former. I can do careful measurements. The 4000s are in use, but the 4700s are waiting for their...

Wanted Campag 1st gen syncro levers or parts

Re: Hi Stephen, Sounds like you have the final version of the Syncro 2 shifters, designed for 8 speed. I also have a pair without the adjuster but engraved. However, I'm afraid I don't have any spares for them. However, the washer isn't doing anything special, just spacing things out. So any...

Wanted Campag 1st gen syncro levers or parts

Re: Hi Barry, Here are exploded views of both versions of Syncro 1. I have both. Are we talking about parts 8, 7, 3 and 2 (and grub 16)? In which case I have them for both types. Or I have complete RH Syncro 1 levers. Nick

Wanted Campag 1st gen syncro levers or parts

Hi Stephen, If you mean this bit, I still have it and am happy to part with it. It is the outermost part of a Syncro 2 RH lever. Maybe from a lower-end groupset, as all the others are metal (silver or black). As far as I can tell, they are all interchangeable. There is some cracking, but I think...

    dating an old Falcon bike

I think we can safely say round about mid-70s, and either of these two models -- there was probably quite a bit of chopping and changing of details from year to year. There might be a date code on the rear mech somewhere, if you really wanted to try to pin it down.

    dating an old Falcon bike

I'm surprised by the stick-on head tube badge, rather than a metal one. Not come across that before on a 70s Falcon. And I thought they never brazed anything on Falcons then, so why the pump peg??

    dating an old Falcon bike

Lugs and fork crown match the Olympic 78, but not the Super Route.

    dating an old Falcon bike

Would be good to drop the stem a bit before riding -- looks like that is above the max line for an SR, and could therefore fail.

    dating an old Falcon bike

I think more likely to be an Olympic 78, given the pressed rear dropouts without mech hanger. See attached from 1975 -- pretty much fits the bill with most of the kit on it being original. Not sure about the wheels -- looks like at least one has been replaced.

    dating an old Falcon bike

Re: Looks like mid to late 70s to me. Not one of the higher end models -- mudguard eyes, pump pegs and no hanger for the rear mech. If the components are original (looks like the Shimano gears might be), then they may have date stamps (cryptic, but there are guides online) that would help. Does...

    Mavic 670 hub tool

We should all chip in to a collective retrobike toolkit, that we can dip in to when we need that obscure tool that can no longer be found anywhere.

Looked more carefully, and now I'm not so sure they're Nisi after all... Anyone?

    Sprint rims.

Yes. See velobase: http://velobase.com/ListComponents.aspx?Category=107 or Classic Rendezvous http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Italy/Nisi_rims.htm for more information and maybe some hints on the model (not always obvious in my experience.)
