Early disc brakes for XC bikes

Re: Thanks for the insights, and good point regarding the timing of v brakes coming in. I've not had the pleasure of trying early discs but can imagine they might not be as good as those of today.

Early disc brakes for XC bikes

Having just been browsing old photos and videos of late 90s XC race bikes, I noticed that disc brakes seem non-existant, although you could buy an XC bike with disc brakes from at least 1996 onwards. Does anyone know why they weren't used at the top level? Did the early discs not work very...

99 Sunn Exact Ti Proteam ex Ludo Dubau

Re: And some action shots. Looks like Avid Pentalign brakes possibly, and are those ESP 9.0SL brake levers? The fork looks like a regular Obsys Carbon to me, but the downtube cable routing indicates this isn't a Morati titanium frame.

99 Sunn Exact Ti Proteam ex Ludo Dubau

Re: Most of the photos I can find are of Christophe Dupouey's bike. A lot of the images show a bike made from Columbus Altec 2 tubing, rather than titanium like my bike, but hopefully give an indication of the spec the team were running. I don't know if the Altec 2 frames came in later in the...

99 Sunn Exact Ti Proteam ex Ludo Dubau

Re: Having said again that its probably finished, I have been trying to find details of these bikes and considering making some changes accordingly. Details seem surprisingly hard to find, and I guess spec between riders and races might have changed, so pinning down an exact spec might be too...

99 Sunn Exact Ti Proteam ex Ludo Dubau

Re: As I'm back home home and been messing around with this a bit, and as its been a while, thought I would update this. I'm surprised how long I've owned this now, where does the time go? And I started this thread saying it was probably finished but I think it really is now..... Some late...

Sunn Revolt or Exact? Frameset or bike...

The Exact was the top of the range and team race XC hardtail from 97 onwards, Columbus steel only in 97 then steel or ti frm 98. The Exact was made in France, the Revolt in the far east, but both great frames. You could get the Flex system on a range of models, e.g. in 98 it was standard on the...

    Identify a frame! Wishbone content

Re: It doesn't give a weight for this frame unfortunately. I think the model name and serial number being engraved into the headtube badge might only apply to the aluminium frames too - it doesn't mention it in the catalogues for the steel frames and I can't see it here on your frame. They...

2000 Commencal Supernormal - sent to try me

Re: Re: Misery loves company ;-) What model is yours, and what issues are you having? With hindsight most of my problems with weredue to a bent mech hanger and the oversize chainstays necessitating on unusual front mech, plus a few worn out components and me not being careful with the bits it...

2000 Commencal Supernormal - sent to try me

Re: Re: With the caveat that I've mainly been riding this on road as its been pressed into service as a commuter, and I've not ridden other aluminium MTBs to compare it to, I like it very much. The geometry is very similar to Sunns of the period - this has a 1mm shorter top tube and wheel...

    Sunn tox seatpost /front mech

Re: Are you sure its not a 26.4mm seatpost you need? I've never had a Tox but I thought all the lower end Sunns took a 26.4mm seatpost.
