Pro cycling chat and Road CC Fantasy Cycling thread 2013

Wouldn't be surprised if there's some illness going through the team. One or two having an off day is understandable not 8 of them. Brailsford is denying it but then he has to otherwise everyone will jump on it. Rest day, flat stage and TT coming up is ideal for them. After their performance...

    Headset keeps loosening

Had this recently on my road bike even when tightening with two spanners, didn't happen straight away but after about 50 miles would start to loosen off. Gave up in the end and used a bit of thread lock on the top nut. Hasn't come loose since.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

Went for a few laps round the small woods at the top of our street today. Well worn paths with a bit of tree roots thrown in and I'm pretty impressed with how the forks handle. Here's the final look, well for the moment, apologies for the shameful chainguard but its doubling as my pootling with...

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

Yeah it does look high, still got to tinker a bit. Got a slightly shorter stem on now and may take out the spacer that's under the stem but trying not to have to cut the steerer down unless I really have to. Front brake is now on and of course its further away from the lever so I need a new...

Forks don't look that bad. There's been a few threads on here about using foil to clean up chrome. That a look at this http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=52096.0 link to see what can be done with a bit of elbow grease.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

So, been tinkering in the garage and this it what it looks like now. Have set the travel to 80mm (well I think I have...) just need the v-brake mounts now. Riding position feels ok and I bumped down a couple of kerbs to test the forks work.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

Yeah, thats them. Thought they'd go for more but nothing happened in the last hour. PM already sent to Tim to see if he's got any v-brake mounts.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

So having made my mind up abut going retro I ended up winning a pair of Pace RC36 Stealth on Ebay  . I guess thats somewhere in the middle of retro and modern which suits how the bike is built and will go nicely with the matt black frame so I'm saved a trip to the powdercoaters. Will post...

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

Cheers for posting a pic, definitely makes me think that the retro approach will look nicer. But does make me think the frame deserves more than its current matt black paint.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

Yeah, a-c measurement was taken with forks mounted and wheels on so 395mm is more likely to be correct. My back will probably welcome that losing that bit of stretch.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

Measured the current rigid forks this morning and they're about 400mm a-c. I think anything modern is just going to look too high.

Thanks for the replies. Instead of focusing my mind its added more options.... Oh well. Off to the for sale section I go.

Suspension forks - retro vs modern

I've got a mid-90s Saracen Kili currently with rigid forks and have just started taking it off-road a bit. Not having done any off-road stuff for about 25 years my aging body isn't really that enamoured with the rattling around its getting. According to the old catalogues it had Rockshox Judys...

    Ugly Modern bikes

Yep, I agree with that to some extent. I can admire the 'science' (for want of a better word) involved in the design and engineering but they just don't stir my soul. In the same way I prefer an old E-Type Jag to the new F-Type.
