1993 Trek 970 What to do?

Keep the bike as it is , it is a stunner and it becomes very difficult to come by to have one in such pristine and unmolested and original condition. 👍 👏 You can always upgrade later the drive train with XT 8000 by changing hubs and the crank, the front derailleur, the rear derailleur and the...

the 708 tubing is a very rare tubing but a very high quality one, I have one Peugeot Prestige made of it and it is both rigid and comfy. Very nice bike.

    Modern shimano options

Modern shimano cranks Dura Ace 9100/9200, Ultegra 8100/8200 are bonded and not forged unlike before and were prone to breaking. Furthermore Dura Ace 9100/9200, Ultegra 8100/8200 STIs are much more fragile than their 7800/6600 predecessors with external cabling, the internal cabling and the...

Why do you collect retro bikes?

I collect them because they don't make them like they used to. I have made all neo retro builds with my MTB frames and I am expecting another last mountain bike a Garry Fisher Hookoo Ekoo in True Temper optibutted with a mix of XTR 980/XT 780T and Race Face. I also have many road bike projects...

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

The tendancy is to have large tyres in the pro peloton such as 700*28 or 700*32 and disc brakes but it didn't prevent of crashes .I use Vbrakes for my moutain bikes who have 26*2.2 tires and never had any problems.

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

I have ridden a road bike disc brake but it was atrocious at braking an emonda, the brakes were squealing and noisy. The wheels on that bike weren't as good as the mavic cosmic or the zipp 60. I can brake with two finger on my MTBs with rim brakes and same on my road rim brake bikes. For road...

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

During more than 60 years rim brakes have been what defined the road bike braking then in 1990 came dura ace 7410 shimano with its dual pivot and redefined what is the road braking system. Disc brakes appeared in 2015 on road bikes.Like I said it depends how were your rim brake calipers set.If...

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

two of my rim braked road bikes 1993 Peugeot Prestige with Dura Ace 7700 brake on the front and on the rear 1998 Vetta Team with Dura Ace 7800 brake on the front and on the rear

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

Rim Brakes, because it requires skills to know how to brake with a rim brake bike in very adverse conditions and I find also disc brakes more finicky and more complicated to maintain than rim brakes. Plus when you needed to change a spoke on disc brake wheel, it is expensive, also a disc brake...

What do you think of Shimano ditching rim brakes in 105 and higher?

I use mainly Dura Ace 7700 and 7800 rim brakes on my road brakes as for disc brakes I don't want them. And braking with rim brakes requires skill especially in adverse conditions.

What do you think of Shimano ditching rim brakes in 105 and higher?

I agree I have A719 on my hybrid gravel bike . If you want a rock solid Mountain rim brake rim, then the Mavic XM 819, XM719, XC 717, EX 823, D519 and EX 721 laced to good hubs will make you indestructible wheels. 3 of my MTBs have XM819 rims, 2 of them have D521 rims , one will have XC 717 and...

What do you think of Shimano ditching rim brakes in 105 and higher?

I have Mavic Crossmax SL SSC rim brakes on two mountain bikes and Mavic Cross Max Mk1 rim brakes on one mountain bikes , never had any issue despite the fact that I don't baby my them. I also have a spare set of Mavic Crossmax Mk1 and a spare set Mavic Crossmax SL SSC rim brakes.
