    Replacing quill stem question

If the current quill is 22.2mm and fits into the steerer and the shim part is 1 1/8 but sits on top of the headset. how would a 1 1/8 quill fit? is the actual bit that goes inside the steerer smaller than 1 1/8? or is it forced into the steerer? Thanks

    Replacing quill stem question

Thanks for your replies. The shim part does not go in to the fork steerer it sits on top of the steerer, It seems to act like a stopper to stop the stem going too far in. Is the stem supposed to go inside the steerer? because I don't think a 1 1/8 would fit inside the steerer because the...

    Replacing quill stem question

The quill has 22.2mm stamped on it on the part that fits into the fork steerer. Does this mean that I have a 1" stem? Whats the point of the shim? the shim doesn't go inside the fork steerer. And I've been told these bikes are 1 1/8. I'm too confused

    Replacing quill stem question

My bike has an ugly 1" quill stem that has been made to fit my 1 1/8 tube... I believe. It 's not the original stem and doesnt look right.. the original... So I've removed the stem to see whats going on.. This is how it looks. The shim bit of the stem half sits on top of the...

Fork question on GIANT CADEX CFM-3

Hey Thanks for your reply. Yeah the original fork is cool and unique, But mine has started to rust in places... I may have it resprayed. After all this I have now come to the conclusion that my bike has an un original 1" quill with a shim! The original looks miles better!! Do you know...

Is my Headset larger than my stem?

Hi thanks I've done a search on google and alot of the images of the same bike have a different blue stem... like this my bike.. Could it be that these bikes had a 1 1/8 quill stem as standard? and mine has been fitted with a 1"? maybe the previous owner wanted more height and he...

Is my Headset larger than my stem?

Thanks The frame is from 1991ish, it's a giant cadex carbon fibre frame. I wanted to put a 1 1/8 fork on it a while ago but was told by forumers it was impossible to do being a 1" quill.

Is my Headset larger than my stem?

Thanks Measured the quill and it is 22.2mm but the sleeve that it goes into measure 25.4mm... So does this mean I can after all get a fork with a 1 1/8 steerer?

STOLEN - GT Rebound 1995 Blue: Chichester city Centre.

Good luck Hope you get it back. Bike theft is way too common in city centres and it's growing with all the eastern european criminals there letting into our country.

I currently have a 1" quill but it appears that the tube is larger? there is like a metal sleeve making it fit ? Just wondering if i could fit a larger fork

    1" threaded fork to a threadless 1 1/8" fork ??

I'm still seeing other posts across the internet of people saying it is possible. "some bikes with 1" steerers can use 1 1/8" forks too some 90s Raleigh MTBs. Max have to measure the headstock then change the headset to match the forks" I've been looking at the 1" forks and haven't seen...

    1" threaded fork to a threadless 1 1/8" fork ??

Hi Thanks for your reply. My question probably seems silly... how could something that's 1/8 bigger fit? etc. But the reason for my question is I've been told 2 different things. 1) 1 1/8 wont fit because of the head tube. 2) 1 1/8 will fit, on MTB the head tube's are bigger than 1"...

Fork question on GIANT CADEX CFM-3

I'm new to messing about with bikes. I've been doing it up, got it looking like new, apart from the fork.. they are cr-mo there are some areas of rust. I was thinking about having them resprayed but also have been thinking about maybe changing the fork for a lighter carbon or aluminium...
