I love the Cadex CFM-3 but they lose there appeal to me as soon as the unique original rigid forks are removed, they set the bike off imo.
adding suspension forks degrades the bike to looking pretty standard.

You have cleared up my confusion regarding fork steerers and stems.
I thought that was the case too.. but the shim doesn't go into the fork steerer it sits on top of it inside the top half of the headset.
I bought a 25.4mm quill for it but it wouldn't fit.

Mine is not identical.
It's weird
A 1 1/8 shim sits above the fork steerer but inside the headset, in the pic above it is slightly extended it can be pushed down so you cant see the shim.
After some serious confusion I bought a 1 1/8 quill stem because mine is horribly ugly and...
Reason why I like retro bikes is there uniqueness.
Your bike used to be unique and now it's just like most suspension bikes you see going around.
certainly looks better now, but i wonder what it would have looked like without painting the frame.
