Odd One. Anyone into ‘Carpentry’ or Metal Detectors?

Thanks everyone. The gizmo duly arrived and I have just done a quick test. It found these pieces of metal that were stuck in the old nail holes: My son took it as a personal challenge to get these out. In future I’ll drill out the holes that light up with the cheap jobber drill bit. It...

Odd One. Anyone into ‘Carpentry’ or Metal Detectors?

I usually drill out the nails holes with a cheap jobber bit. That cleans out most of the metal. The pin pointer will hopefully help. The obvious answer is to get a spiral cutter made of something hard. That would cost more than the planer thicknesser.

Odd One. Anyone into ‘Carpentry’ or Metal Detectors?

I’ve taken a chance on a Dr Otek on ebay. A recognised make (?) rather than one of the many copies for sale. If it does t work on the wood, I’ll see if I can find a key I lost in the back garden! Thanks All.

Odd One. Anyone into ‘Carpentry’ or Metal Detectors?

Thank you so much @Totoro . That is very helpful. The problem is the nails that hold some pallets together have arms that stop them pulling out. My homemade pallet breaker provides huge leverage that pulls the nails out often leaving the arms behind. Maybe I’m going about this the wrong way...

Most of the stuff I do is sold to further fund our local Repair Café. This sort of thing: And Elephant.

Odd One. Anyone into ‘Carpentry’ or Metal Detectors?

I enjoy, but aren’t much good at making things from wood. The wood tends to be quite rough; often old pallets complete with nails and the fragmented remains there of. The blades in my planer/thicknesser take a bit of a battering therefore. Taking them out to sharpen and remove the nicks is a...

    Today's Ride

No photos actually en-route as I didn’t stop. My riding has I think started to change. I always rode the same loop of 24 miles trying to shave seconds off on each ride. Like an economy based on continuous growth, this isn’t sustainable! What rides I have done this year have been on new roads...

    Missing Brake Part. Serious?

It was I think a victim of the ice induced crash I had back in January. I went over the bike eventually and found this: Please excuse the mess and DVD collection. I don’t think I will ever take up ‘Streaming’ or whatever! Anyway, it is the tiny washer that is missing from the pivot of the...

    Today's Ride

Luckily my son is so fearful of bikes, he gripped the bars so hard he melted one of the grips! I have never understood the physics of jumping without being clipped into the pedals. I have tried it on flats and it felt horrible. Back to SPD/Time as quickly as I could.

The only time my wheels leave the ground is when I lift the bike into the back of the car.

    Cantilever Brake Masterclass

Thanks everybody. I’m about to order some new blocks. I’m going for Koolstop Eagle 2s. Any good? I remember the brakes working well with shorter blocks. The bike is a Saracen: Which at this vintage used full length internal outers for the rear brake. Ignore the rear tyre, something more...

    Today's Ride

I went mountain biking! First one since the Turkey Twizzler on Cannock. I rode Follow the Dog with the folks on E bikes. You know that it don’t count as an overtake don’t you folks? I was surprisingly quick on the downhills. Please see my thread on setting up cantilever brakes! I had issues...

    Cantilever Brake Masterclass

I’m in need of one! I went mountain biking yesterday. It was an eventful ride. I had some issues, all of them cantilever related. I remember them being quite good back in the day. They could bring me and my bike to a skidding halt with minimum input. I would adjust them and they worked...

    Ladies Dawes Galaxy

Very nice. I am half heartedly looking for similar for my daughter. Thankfully she stopped growing just before she became taller than me. Rarely does one for someone who is 5’11” appear though.

    Pets

I have put off making this post. Our beloved Vinnie died last year and we got another second hand cat. He was named Jagger as he was found abandoned at a Jag Land Rover site. We didn’t much like the name and instead (keeping the theme) called him Mick. He is a proper ring piece. The reason...

    Retrobike Touring.

I still haven’t been! Work and weather have conspired against me. I have done a few warm up rides more to see how riding with a trailer is than serious preparation. Today was another warm up: Before I set off and then another a good bit into rural Staffordshire: I don’t plan on using...

    Today's Ride

The wife headed off early to drive to the start of another walk. “I’ll meet you at the end,” says me. I still haven’t done my tour but decided this could be yet another warm up for it. New roads to me out in the Staffordshire farm lands. The first thing to catch my attention were two or three...
