Late 40s / Early 50s René Herse tip find

    Would this be sacrilege? https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/cranks/rh-double-crank/

    nutted brake calipers

I get the same warning. Jtek is a legit company so not sure why the warning.

    nutted brake calipers

No, but you can get one here. Just replace the bolt on the rear brake and mount it on the fork. Replace the recessed nut on the front brake with a hex nut and mount it on the back. Easy peasy. https://www.jtekengineering.com/other/jtek-dual-pivot-brake-bolt-nut-conversion/

    nutted brake calipers

If you are handy you can buy the bolts/nuts to convert any dual pivot brake set to nutted from ebay. I did it to a set of Tektros and am pretty happy with the results.

Convert 1968 Raleigh Pro to indexed brifter shifting

My pleasure. Another solution is diacompe's butterfly shifters. I have them on another bike, but the gevenalle system works best. http://www.diacompe.com.tw/product/ene-wing-shifter/

Convert 1968 Raleigh Pro to indexed brifter shifting

Personally I'd just put some gevenalle audax brake leavers on there and mount your existing friction shifters on them. IRD also makes a similar product that can work with shimano bar ends / downtube shifters or their own friction shifters. I have the IRD ones on my gravel bike running 9 speed...

    Question about saddles

I had a couple of bikes BITD that came with Vetta saddles. I found one and put it on my Miyata 1000 and have been enjoying it much more than the Turbo I bought a few years ago. Avocet was also a popular saddle manufacturer back then. I have a leather covered Cinelli Unicantor as well that came...

Are retro MTBs a good place for a tight-budget beginner to start?

20 years ago I was riding a full suspension free ride mountain bike with 5 inches of travel front and back. I haven't ridden the modern stuff so can't tell you how much better it is than my old stuff, but those old bikes were extremely capable compared to the bikes this site is focused on and a...

BoTM Deanphoto's 1993 GT Team RTS is voted Bike of The Month for October 2023

Lovely bike. What could be better in the 90's than a Zaskar with full suspension?

    Roadbike with MTB components ?

I would think as long as you have a bb with the correct spindle length you should be fine. Most of my experience is with touring and hybrid bikes, but mountain bike mechs and cranks were developed from cyclo touring options originally.

    The big sales slowdown

I've noticed that locally the bottom has fallen out of used parts and frame prices over the last couple of years. Same with vintage bikes. I've also found myself veering more towards the 8 speed hyperglide side of things in my personal acquisitions.

Yes, FB Marketplace is definitely the place to get bargains. I've had some good luck there as well.

    1980s Somec Special (Finished 2)

I used blond on some red newbaums tape and it toned the colour down a bit, but didn't make it look brown / orange like the darker shellacks. What I like about the shellack is that it keeps the tape from getting dirty and dingy. It also makes the bars a bit grippier - the formulation I made feels...

    Pre 1999?

I've got 9 speed Microshift from a few years back on my wife's first road bike and its been reliable so definitely a good option if an upgrade is required.
