2.7 doesnt sound to bad - my Alfine 11 is 2.2ish when you include the shifter, mounting kit and sprocket. the weight would be better placed in the more central possition with this system to.

I own a hybrid to ride the 7 miles to work (and back again) and i have to say its much, much better that riding an MTB with slicks - 700c wheels are and specific road gearing make a large difference. If he's never going to take it off road other than the ocasional tow path then get a Hybrid...

yep - my pair arrived this morning too, very please - only noticed a very very small (1mm or less) scratch to the frame on the reverse side and thats it... in original packaging/box....
