:( Sorry to say I can't make this one, I've not had much work the past couple of months and would not be able to get the fuel/ferry costs past the management, Shame as I have never been to the IOW. Enjoy your day out. Cheers Phil D

It was Rich34's '76 Galaxy - now The Dawes Galaxy thread!

Just seen this post looks like I will have to keep my eye out for a galaxie now, the list gets longer!!! Now the reason for my post, the only name I have ever known that style of brake called is SUICIDE BRAKES. Fine for the first few miles until the cables stretched then that panic moment at...

Help...This mornings hack buy...but what the is it?

Looks like a case of badge engineering here. Hung the bare frame no forks on my spring scales 6lbs (no light weight). As you can see from the photos only the badges look different, any idears who actually made them? I am also thinking of rebuilding as a skinny tyre 7-8 speed hack. Phil

    Hirame By Kuwahara info reqd

Hello biggs, Not fully painted yet just, before Christmas the weather came in very soggy down here. What I decided to do was clean up and spray the worst bits and see how it matches to try and keep the paint as original as possible. Most of the down tube is now primed up so now to clean around...

    Hirame By Kuwahara info reqd

Good to see another Hirame on this site and it looks in good condition, mine is the one linked to above. I can not see from the picture if it has mudguard eyes or not, they did 3-4 different frame specs. On my frame it seems like the date is part of the frame number under the BB, mine was built...

Help...This mornings hack buy...but what the is it?

Just seen this, it looks a bit like a frame i picked up from croydon just before christmas same colour and lugless. mine is labeled as a radford handbuilt frame, has the same type of frame badge plus 2 others . To late and cold to go down to the garage and get a photo to post. will do one in the...

    Fixed off roading

Id go down the local recycle centre and see what is around in the kids and bmx bikes. At one time chainsets were steel and had cotter pins and the rings never wore out but the cotter pins always found a way to fall out. A kiddie size chainset in steel would probably weigh the same as a standard...

    Muddy Townsend........!

Is that the frame with the 531 tubes pink & black originaly? if it is looks like you have got rid of the biopace chainset (never liked it but too tight to replace 2 of them mine & wifes). In my opinion the frames are good, light & handle well but lost out because you can only fit upto 1.85 tyres...

    Pub bike Dawes Jaguar

I Bought this in 1995-6 as a bike for around town and going down the pub (4 miles away), as I did not want to use my MTB or Road bike loaded with s 600 bits as there was nothing solid to lock them up to. It was for sale in a bike shop in old stevenage Paid £50.00 for it and it looked like it...

South West Retro Ride - Sunday 4th December - Haldon Forest.

Thanks for organizing the ride, had a great time, my knees are still complaining. When I get to the time when they don't after an off road ride I may even start keeping up with some of you. I remember those cavalier's used to get a ride in one in my first full time job 1976...

A brace of townsend trail 531's (was that yuck I heard)

I tend to buy bikes with a big leaning towards the frame materials. At the time the trend in the mags was that the components wear out quick so you will soon need to replace/upgrade them. And with the offer of 531 main tubes against the likes of muddy fox offering plain tube bikes with similar...

Hirame frame restoration what paint finish

No intention of having a hanger/garage queen. And it won't be concours not with me rebuilding it I intend to reuse original parts where still fit for purpose after cleaning them up. Which brings me to the forks which have had a polish, the result is not very pretty! See below quote for a...

'Harry Hall' - First Road 'Restomod'

Dura ace band on If you dont need the indexed gears use dura ace leavers from about 1985 or you could use sis indexing levers (band on was still being used in the late 80's) from 1986 on with a 7 or 8 speed cog on the back. From my understanding the leavers dictate how far the changers move...

Stripped the bike down yesterday The bike is now down to the basic frame so now time to post some more revealing pictures of its condition. As you can see the worst of the problems were not visable in the other shots. I will attack the chome with auto sol and see how it comes up, I suspect that...

Hirame frame restoration what paint finish

Thanks old ned for showing that catalog, it is the Osaka Pro From the description. Looks like I got a bargain from Whiskers in 1986 as the frame was offered with Shimano 600 arabesque crankset for £80.00. I got them to build the bike and when I went to pick it up it had a 600 ex crankset on it...

Hirame frame restoration what paint finish

I had a colour mix done for the frame about 24 years ago, the paint mixer said it was clear over base and luckly the two pots are still usable if they are a good match, if it is I should have enough to mix up and spray the whole frame. If not I will go to the local paint factors with the frame...

Hirame frame restoration what paint finish

Thats a loverly condition frame dos'nt look like its been used unlike mine, a while back I was looking for an Hirame frame as a project to do a nine speed version, single chainring and nine on the cog less weight and no over lap on the gearing but then I moved to cornwall. Now one of my bikes...
