Parts for a restored 1948 RRA frameset

Re: That crank looks good to me :) Info on BB lengths here. Looks like 122mm for fixed/single speed/hub gear or 125.5mm for a single chainring derailleur setup. Seatpost size is 25.4mm. You've decided on wooden rims, but as an aside, what were referred to as 27" tubulars are actually the...

Parts for a restored 1948 RRA frameset

That chainset is the type fitted to low grade Raleigh's up til the 80's. Finding a genuine post-war RRA chainset will be tough, like most components that were specific to that bike (eg, pedals, stem, saddlebag rack), they're rare as rocking horse poop. You should be able to find the fluted...

Rudge Ulster Sports bicycle, how old and what to do with it?

Re: Re: I'm pretty sure that the Ulster Sports was based on the Raleigh Trent Sports - similar to a Lenton, but built with 2030 hi-tensile tubing throughout instead of the 531 main tubes on the Lenton.

Rudge Ulster Sports bicycle, how old and what to do with it?

I've run (and still use) Sturmey 4 speed hubs (FW's, FG's )and FM's) for many, many miles on several bikes, and that's certainly not my experience. The hubs may be slightly more sensitive to correct cable adjustment than an AW, but once correctly set up, they're no less reliable than a 3 speed IMO.

Retro 'Compacts': A Tale of Obsession

I've also investigated knee friendly gearing setups for classic bikes in the past so I can add some more info... There are loads of options here. Stronglight 80/99/100/Escape chainsets all have an 86bcd which gives a minimum ring size of 28T. SR also made a similar 86bcd chainset called the...

Is this a Raleigh Record Ace?

I don't think it's a Lenton Grand Prix - lugs are the wrong shape and the Lenton had mudguard eyes on the dropouts, not the forks/stays. It also has the RRA saddlebag rack braze ons. RRA Moderne maybe?

Raleigh flyer seatpost diametre and downtube size?

I'd say it almost certainly takes a 28.6 front mech.

Nice one - just goes to show you should always try these things.

Any Shimano SIS mech should work fine except the Dura Ace 74xx models.

    Shimano 600EX shifting problem

Yes but a 10 speed Campag shifter will pull the right amount of cable with a Shimano indexed rear mech to a shift a shimano 8 speed setup correctly. The CTC Shimergo page gives more information about the various combinations that work together.

    Shimano 600EX shifting problem

The 6207 rear mech is not index compatible unfortunately - it's friction shift only. The 6208 was the first Shimano 600 rear mech that worked with indexing.
