Yes, it can be done given the correct tools (Cyclus have them as stock items) and you should not need a donor hub, the spares are still available from the factory as they are the same as some of the later generation, non-oversize axle hubs ... Depending on where you are, your local ProShop...

TBH I'd have to have a measure-up. Leave it with me, I'll be able to confirm for you tomorrow. I'm up at the workshop and have Athena bikes as well as Record 2011 bikes there so a direct comparison is easy ... My gut says yes but best to be 100pc sure!

You have to be careful mixing and matching Campag rings - they are not all the same thickness and you can hit issues there because the rings are supported from both inner and outer sides - so if you get a mismatch of ring thickness, you can end up with a kink in the rings where they pass behind...

Re: Actually, there is a reason - it means that the ring is correctly positioned relative to the outer, so that the tooth timing is right - if you move the ring round 1/5 of a turn, the teeth on the inner ring don't align correctly with the ramps and pins on the outer to get a smooth shift...

Cage length is "a factor" but not "the factor" in gear capacity and tooth capacity - esp in retro situations where the gear hanger / dropout configuration is potentially a lot more complicated. Cage length has some influence over how much chain can be wrapped but again it's not the only factor...

Re: If it were me: Check the brake spindle is straight - if the bike has been crashed, sometimes the spindle gets bent to the left where the adjuster side whips round and impacts the downtube. Check the two nuts on the front of the brake are tight against one another and that there is no play...
