Show us your 700C ATB / MTB / Hybrid

Here’s my ’95 Avalanche commuter that I recently converted to 700c using some Ritchey road forks and a custom adapter for the rear brake. More here: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/gt-avalanche-1995.449535/

    GT Avalanche 1995

Two years on and I’m still loving my Avalanche, used almost daily, rain or shine (or snow 😉) It’s had a few parts swapped out for one reason or another but essentially it's the same. It’s even seen a bit of action in a 50 km event. A temporary change of tyres, saddle and pedals saw it...

    The Official Retrobike shipping Sticky

Does anyone know of a reliable and sensibly priced (UPS quoted £500!) shipping company to send a bike from Italy to another EU country (Sweden)? The seller will pack but requests that I organise the shipping, he doesn't trust local companies. Cheers 🙂

    Kona A'ha Stars & Bars 1997

Cranks were 170mm which is what I usually use. On this small frame road calipers were the easiest option with the 700c wheels, the rear triangle was pretty tight so the seatstay bridge was low enough for the calipers to reach the rim. As mentioned I had to drill a hole in the bridge which didn't...

    Kona A'ha Stars & Bars 1997

It was a bit of a spare parts box build so the details are a little fuzzy. The wheels I took from an 80s racer that I picked up dirt cheap, I re-laced the rear rim to an old LX hub. The gearing was a matter of experimenting with what I could get away with. I’m sure I used a half-link in the...

    Kona A'ha Stars & Bars 1997

Very cool project! Just like yourself I love the proportions of cruiser and mini BMXs which inspired this build for my 13” Stumpjumper. I used 700c wheels with a longer rear axle, drilled the seatstay bridge to fit road callipers and made a custom bracket to accommodate them on the P2 fork...

    Super right Superlight

Well, two years down the line and probably unsurprisingly the upgrades happened 😂 To be honest I haven’t used it so much, it usually comes out in the winter when road and bmx riding aren’t really a viable option. Again I found a donor bike, but with full SLX, including my first set of tubeless...

    GT Avalanche 1995

Still pleased with my Avalanche, made a few changes over the last couple of months: – Found out that the freehub bearings were shot after various cassette tightening episodes and the sidewalls on rear rim were pretty worn too so I swapped the wheels to another pair of LX-hubbed Mavics from the...

    GT Avalanche 1995

Haha like a bit of patina myself, but it's way too long for my needs unfortunately.

    GT Avalanche 1995

The stem has an internal clamp forward of the steerer tube rather like a Syncros Cattleprod. I was also curious to what it was and after some googling it looks like the original GT stem that has faded from black to this bronze colour over the years (it’s still black inside the clamping areas).

    GT Avalanche 1995

Cheers! It’ll be used daily come rain or shine :)

    GT Avalanche 1995

After a few evenings of tearing down then building back up with parts-box bits I have my commuter :) I'll start at the front, Specialized Direct Drive forks (rattle-canned matte black a few years ago) with a shortish no-name stem, Answer ProTaper risers and some Box bmx grips. Unfortunately I...

    GT Avalanche 1995

Just picked up this Avalanche in my size from an elderly gentleman. Bit of a spontaneous buy, never owned a GT and love this classic era, needs a thorough going over but it seems like a sound bike under the neglect. Looks pretty stock, cantis have been replaced by XT v-brakes along with a few...

Summer project... 19?? Intense Uzzi SL build...

Looks like a great project 😊 love the 100% polished frame and original Intense logos. Some fluro yellow Racelines would fit this I reckon 👍
