    Marin seat post size?

Re: I have a 1994 Marin Pine Mountain and the post size is 27.0. Could it be that your 1994 Bear Valley is also 27.0? Looking at the catalogue, I think the two bikes have used the same frame that year.

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

Re: Re: So close! Some really nice stuff in their catalog. Only $15 for an M8 143mm Ti bolt and $9 for an M6 one :). That's not bad! Such a shame it's not a bit longer.

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

Re: Re: For me, it's DEFINITELY worth it. Even more so for touring, where you might be cycling for 8 hours or more some days. I cycle to have fun and I know from experience that cycling up a mountain when it's 40 degrees outside is far more enjoyable when you are carrying less stuff. You enjoy...

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

Re: Re: I need quite a long stem bolt of 150mm (was 190mm before I modified the stem). I expect this is quite longer than the syncros. The stem is just a random 'etc' one chosen because it's very tall (need height as it's for a touring bike build), but still relatively lightweight, and has a 2...

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

I could try an alu bolt, but again it seems to be pretty difficult to find them. It's such a specialist item. I'll keep an eye out for syncros stems though. I found these aluminium gear shift rods, which would work and are lighter than titanium. Not sure though about using m6 aluminium for the...

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

I'll see your expertly machined parts and raise you a machined gold nanocrystal. Do tell though, what are we looking at in your photo? Looks like some pretty serious stuff.

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

Hmmm, very interesting. They have m6 130mm and m5 170mm. SO CLOSE! I'll give them an email and see what they say :). Awesome! Nice work. I need a lathe. he he

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

I don't have a Ti specific die unfortunately, but my die set is Ti coated so would hopefully do a bit better than a standard die if I try. Provided that isn't just a marketing gimmick. Thanks for the links everyone. I'll probably give those suppliers an email and see how much they'd charge if...

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

I think you may need to use a new hacksaw blade :P. As it happens, just this morning I cut a Ti seatpost bolt down to size and it took less than a minute to cut through (27g saved off the bike thank you very much 8)). I used a full size hacksaw with a recently replaced blade and this definitely...

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

Re: Cheers for the info for the lathe. A mate of mine does use a machine shop at a car maker in the midlands which is close-by. He might be able to help me out with a couple of parts if I fail miserably by hand. So do you mean you succesfully tapped some ti by hand? Or did you use a...

Anyone ever tried machining their own titanium parts?

I've been looking for a really long titanium stem bolt for a quill stem (m6x150mm) and they are so expensive/hard to find. This got me thinking back to my school design+technology classes when we tapped threads onto a steel rod using a tap and dye set or a lathe. I found that you can buy a grade...

Titanium quill stem bolt M6 or M8 size - 150mm or longer

HI all, I'm after a titanium allen key bolt for a quill stem (threaded forks). I need one which is at least 150mm in length. Either M6 or M8, but preferably M6 (6 or 8mm bolt diameter). Anyone have one they'd consider selling me Otherwise does anyone have a recommendation on where I might find...

Raleigh Kalahari - my new project

Re: Re: The rust probably won't help. might be a good idea to replace the inner cables and outers if they are rusty. Usually, gear outer cable outers are made of several wire strands which run parallel to the gear cable wrapped in plastic. Brake outers on the other hand are usually made of a...

Raleigh Kalahari - my new project

Re: Re: Could it be the cables? Are the cable outers 'gear cable outers' as opposed to 'brake cable outers'. If you use the wrong ones it can make a huge difference and result in unresponsive spongey gear changes.

    Stolen Morati

Just in case you haven't, have you made a police report? If the bike turns up on ebay or gumtree etc, you can then refer to the report number which will help a lot getting the police to go with you/turn up to retrieve the bike.

    ball bearings....

lol. My bikes are MUCH more important than the Hubble telescope. On second thought, you'd probably better take the new bearings to NASA first to get their roundness measured. Only then should you use them in your hub. It does make a difference though especially in this case since the other 9...
