    1994 Team Marin - sub 20lb :)

ha ha! Very good point. Thanks for that! :) I suspect that the reflectors may have been responsible for a bit of wobble when spinning the wheels in a repair stand too. 9kg seems like a really nice weight. It's light enough that this morning on a quick ride to my post office, I wanted to adjust...

    1994 Team Marin - sub 20lb :)

Thought I'd share a few photos from a ride I took today on my 1994 Team Marin. It was just amazing to finally be able to ride this bike. Went for a bit of a ride through some fields, some dirt roads, some tow paths, and a few miles on road. Nice and varied (at least the type of stuff I...

What Cleaning stuff/Lubes etc do you use?

Just regular wd40 in a spray can. I don't buy into those myths :P. It seriously doesn't harm anything, in my experience. Been doing it for years. Never had any issues with seals or anything else like parts wearing out faster etc. Also works fine as lubricant. I think people may have problems...

What Cleaning stuff/Lubes etc do you use?

Not making any claims that what I do is a good way of doing things, but I use: -wd40 as both degreaser and lube. -washing up liquid in warm water (but will probably now try cheap car shampoo) to clean. -big cheapo sponge, old kitchen brush and the girlfriends toothbrush (shhh don't tell...

    headtube cable routing issue

Woohoo! So maybe it's not so much of a problem after all then. One step closer to being able to ride the bike :). I put a little bit of very narrow heatshrink tubing over the brake cable which rubs, and shrunk it in place. Has helped somewhat with the catching problem. As always, some good...

    headtube cable routing issue

Re: Re: ha ha! I like the laissez faire attitude. The problem is mostly when the inner cable catches on the ferrules, it kinda hinders steering past a certain point. I might try just putting some cable housing over the inner cable at the problem area to stop it catching. Somehow you managed to...

    headtube cable routing issue

I've been finishing up a 1994 Team Marin build and I'm so excited to almost be able to actually ride it! :) Unfortunately though I've run into another annoying bike problem and this time it's to do with cable routing. The 1994 Team Marin frame has the derailleur cable stops brazed onto the head...

JIS Crank ISO Spindle. Recipe for disaster?

He he. It all adds up . Found a newish Shimano UN55 BB (68-110 JIS) in my parts bin which I didn't know I had :D. Weighed it and it's 240g! The carbon ones I linked to (token, tifosi velospace, neco) are all about 230ish for 68-113ish size. Another example of supposedly ligher stuff not...

JIS Crank ISO Spindle. Recipe for disaster?

Do you think that was definitely because of ISO and JIS mixing? I had the same thing happen to me on my first racing bike, but it was just because of worn cranks. Very bizarre feeling I can tell you suddenly losing a crank arm while cycling through traffic!

JIS Crank ISO Spindle. Recipe for disaster?

I obviously don't specifically want to use an ISO BB for JIS crank just for fun . Can't find any lightweight JIS type BB's at the size I need which aren't ludicrously expensive (i.e more expensive than a set of ISO cranks and new lightweight ISO BB combined). Just wanting to know if...

Attempted garage break in - what to do to secure bikes now..

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any reason that a chain would be stronger than a d-lock made of similar thickness and same material (provided that the shackle is filled with stuff - like wheels, bike tubing etc :D) People use chains because they are easier to lock through wheels...

Attempted garage break in - what to do to secure bikes now..

Very nice Akita! That's awesome if he likes to run while you bike. :) I can also confirm that Shetland Sheepdogs make amazing alarms/watch dogs :D. They may not be intimidating due to their small, cute and fluffy nature, but the burglar won't know that from the other side of a locked door ;)...

JIS Crank ISO Spindle. Recipe for disaster?

Has anyone ever tried using a JIS taper crankset on an ISO tapered bottom bracket? From my research into the actual physical dimensions of ISO and JIS spindles, I think that the two should be pretty interchangeable. If you use a JIS crank on ISO spindle, you need a spindle size about 4-4.5mm...

    Straight Handlebars

If you are after something light, this site is pretty useful. They have a ton of retro bars and a lot of the actual weights listed. These marin ones are the lightest on there, but the logo is not too obvious.

Attempted garage break in - what to do to secure bikes now..

I would consider the purpose of bike locks used indoors to be: 1) A deterrent against an opportunist or common burglar. 2) To slow down a proper bike thief. An experienced bike thief can defeat any lock. If you have space, I would get a proper bike rack big enough for all your bikes (nice to...
