I think it’s t’other way round, he has the stem and he wants to use it on some normal forks. But if you can measure the forks that will answer the original question !

Chances are it's a multiple of fractions of inches - although if it's 1 3/16" (= 30.2mm) which is halfway between 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" then you're SOL finding anything off the shelf unfortunately.

I never even knew they did a U version of these. I have a pair of the cantilever versions, and to switch them between front/rear you just pull them apart and switch the spiral bits from one side to the other.

The quill of the stem *IS* 1 1/8", i.e. 28.6mm, but it's *FOR* a 1 1/4" steerer. The 1 1/4" is the outside of the tube, the inside where the stem goes is 1 1/8".

It certainly did. They must have subsequently met a bloke down the pub who reckoned it's worth £800 easy and definitely would have paid a grand for it it if it was only a week earlier / week later / he'd already sold his bike / hadn't already sold his bike / his dog wasn't ill / the fence fell...
