    And today I did......

Re: Re: Hang on, you're going too fast. I'm just upsizing my road bikes to 126mm from 120mm and wondering where I'll find a hub as wide as that. :)

Lock down fun - autopsy on eBay bargain Dawes Galaxy

The traditional weighing of the bits Frame weight 2.125kg Fork weight 880gms So that's the end of the autopsy, but not the end of the bike. Unlike most autopsies, in this case, the patient will be reconstituted and restored to health. Reverse autopsy to follow... :)

[Job done] BB was no problem. Hardest part was getting off the plastic caps covering the crank bolts. They had gone brittle and disintegrated leaving enough in the crank to stop the bolts being accessed. A bit of time and careful chiselling with a homemade chisel (modified ex spoke) sorted...

Lock down fun - autopsy on eBay bargain Dawes Galaxy

A bit of research including eBay of all places has turned up a few similar examples with 27" wheels. So the Maillard hubs are probably original. From what I've been able to glean from going through old mags and catalogues is that the 700c wheels probably came in with the brazed on rear brake...

Lock down fun - autopsy on eBay bargain Dawes Galaxy

So should I be happy to have a nice Campag wheel for the bike? What could be wrong with that? Hopefully nothing, but... When I placed it beside the other wheels I noticed it was slightly smaller. A quick check of the wheels with the Maillard hubs revealed they had Weinmann 27x1¼" rims, The...

Lock down fun - autopsy on eBay bargain Dawes Galaxy

Ah, the wheels... I got 3 with the bike. Condition obvious. These look like the originals. Maillard hubs, no axles, cones rusty. No point investigating these further, which is a shame because the spokes are tight and evenly tensioned and the rims are in very good condition. And then there...

But you must admit a derailleur hanger is an ace place to hang a rear light. :) Sacrilege? - I haven't finished yet. :)

Lock down fun - autopsy on eBay bargain Dawes Galaxy

Re: Re: He can have all the orange bits free... :) First surprise was the seat post came out cleanly. There was the remains of grease on the post. The bolt took some persuading though. Emboldened, next was the stem. The bolt didn't want to turn at first, but when it did, the stem also came...

The signs of corrosion were everywhere The internals of the hubs were totally stuffed as well. Pretty much what you'd expect from a bike from beside the sea. Definitely a project bike. :)

Derailleur? Oops, it fell off. Also the seller contacted me after the sale to tell me I'd forgotten to pick up one part. Jamie will immediately guess what it was - the freewheel/cassette. :) Sorry to disappoint Velo, but a hub gear is what it will get. I haven't got the intellectual...

Lock down fun - autopsy on eBay bargain Dawes Galaxy

When you're planning a cull, it's probably best not to look on eBay. This is the bargain I just got. To be fair, I've had my eye out for canti Galaxy for a while. The bike came from Plockton which is right on the sea, and the pics showed plenty rust, and the wheels were very obviously...

    And today I did......

Don't worry, you've got at least another 30+ years to go. :) Mountain bike magazines are full of spindly legged gearies and exist to sell expensive consumable shiny bike bits to a market that has been conditioned to buying a whole new drivetrain every few years instead of grudgingly replacing...

Re: Re: It disguises my technical incompetence offroad, and lack of speed on road. Maybe I'm just a Rambler with a bike. :) And Oops, I just did N+1. I put a low bid on a Dawes Galaxy and to my surprise won it.

I went for a within the guidelines trundle around the local area. Took a few excursions off the sticky black stuff... ...and ended up in the woods... ...for some easy natural terrain. There were fences and dykes to cross... ...and opportunities to perfect my half-bunnyhop Do...

    And today I did......

Re: Re: In my early days I used to carry a Thor hammer on the bike specifically for that job. Used it more on my mates' alloy rims than my Dunlop steel ones. I had the same concept of a road ride then as I have now. :)
