Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

More fun with wheels today. 26" x 2.35" Super Motos on Weinmann 57mm rims. Too big - tyre comes out at 65mm width. After a serendipitous find behind my shed, I pulled the wheels of an old Peugeot which has lain out for 10 years. 26" x 2.35" Super Motos on Alex 27mm rims (21 internal)...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Thanks Velo. I regard 42mm as skinny tyres. :) I know about the V-brake extenders but I wasn't keen on the idea. They're cheap enough though. :) I had a more cunning ploy which involved manufacture of new brake arms and many happy hours with a file. However I found in Akenahten's tomb a set...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

A bit of trial wheel sizing going on. 700cx28mm in front on narrow rim, 26"x2.35" Super-Moto on rear with 40mm rim. 650Bx47mm Horizon on narrow rim at front, 26"x2.35" Super-Moto on rear with 40mm rim. Got a bit excited about the 650B because those tyres are really light and I have a...

Nice ride Clubby. eBike and bog, that would be an interesting find for archeologists in a 1,000 years time. :) Every ride I do I'm grateful Scotland is so beautiful and love the way the same ride is different scenery depending on the season of the year.

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Re: Re: I thought a man of your experience and talent would have recognised it's the mount for an oversize rear light. Those early carbide lamps were quite heavy. :) I like the brevity of 'Gravel' but 'All Terrain' is a better description of what we ride here, especially when we throw in a...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Re: Re: 26" is an option. I have a new set of 2.35" Schwalbe Super Motos which are a nice fast slick. But that's too easy. I've got to spoke up a set of wheels for this anyway, so I may as well go for proper sized wheels. Anyway small wheels are only fun when they're 20". :) It's not going...

Next stage in the mock up for the bike Dawes should have made in 1988. A Rough Stuff/All Terrain/Gravel bike. If it works, I'm going to badge it up as a Windrush II. :) Destickered, Dawes Concorde bars, Ideale saddle as fitted to 1959s and 1960s Dawes, and roughly set to my position. Saddle...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

I've been a bit quiet here lately, the cull is going well because it's down 2 frames and then up 2 frames from starting point. :) I thought I was doing well, I gave a frame to Jamie, so N-1, but he then gave me a nice Viking frame, so back to N. Desperate to reduce the herd, I then gave a very...

You're a better rider than me IMO so don't worry about it.

Re: Re: Oh dear, it must be contagious. Between the 3 of us we make up nearly 50% of the single speed class. With my current level of fitness, I'm assured at least a 7th place in class. :) I was out for a run today. I figure I spend so much time walking in the race so as not to hold up the...

Good crank shortening solution. A great day up north is a truly great day. We need another big ride up there.

Re: Re: Not just any woman. She rode the legs of 3 of us, crashed heavily once early in the ride but bounced up and kept going, shot up all the steep hills, and while the rest of us were on mtbs, she did it all on an old Dawes mixte with skinny tyres. To top it all, she then went for a swim...

Lock down fun pt2 - reconstitution of Dawes Galaxy

A whole month with not an update? Obviously the bike has been taken back to bare metal, repainted by an artisan shop and original transfers carefully fitted before a coat of clear lacquer was applied, NOS components fitted, and so it is now indistinguishable from its brandnew self of 30 odd...

My secret to stuck crank removal

That's a handy tool. Probably a good idea to carry it in your saddlebag in case you feel the need to polish your tapers on a ride. :)
