    New bike :)

Shimano 105 cables will probably be the wrong length. I say that as the routing on the older bikes is not the same as more modern ones. Take your old ones including the outers to your LBS (local bike shop) and they should be able to match them.

Superbe Pro - where is the love?

I always like their blocks and the fact that you could get something with close ratios at the high end and spaced a little wider at the other e.g. 13,14,15,16,18,21 which gave a bite more flexibility than a 13 straight.

Got my hands on a Panasonic PR-6000

Nice Find ! The seatpost is bound to have been modified by a previous owner to get it to fit.

    New bike :)

Sorry to rain on your parade but I wouldn't trust my life to something that has had a front end smack like that. I would think that the handling would be a little unusual too.

    Downtube Shifters--

quote] yeah I have shimano friction downtube shifters on my carlton and they're pretty awful to use, I can't change gear unless i'm on totally flat, straight road and even then it's a wobbly mess Practice makes perfect !

Riding fixed - all it is cracked up to be?

Aah I was just reminiscing about fixed on the 27" wheel thread. Back inthe late 70's early 80's we all used to ride fixed in the winter typically a 67 or 69" gear. What I liked i was the improvement in twiddling ability and the fantastic braking effect. If you have low ground clearance you...

    Size of road wheels

If it's a non cassette hub fixing it should be no problem all you will need is a threaded sprocket and a lockring ( as I recall an english old style bb lockring will fit) Ah the joy of fixed, 69" or 67" all winter - certainly used to feel weird when you went back to freewheel in the spring !

I think Ned's right I have a Record headset in steel on my '76 Roberts that is rounded as described.

    Size of road wheels

Agree with everything said re brake drops. If you have a nice 27" er then you should really stick with 27" otherwise the clearances are going to look horrible. Unfortunately the run of the mill 27" tyres are usually 1 1/4" and a bit like MTB's. I have a 1976 Roberts and used to run Michelin...

    Ammonia for stuck seatpost

Indeed ammonia and sodium hydroxide are different chemicals but they are both alkalis and will dissolve aluminium. As a chemist I would indeed choose the latter over ammonia because it is a much stonger alkali and will work much faster, another advantage is that it has a low odour.

    Ammonia for stuck seatpost

Not tried these myself but what about 1. vibration - idea is to break the bond between the two items. e.g. like you get out of an SDS hammer drill on hammer stop ? i.e. the setting used for chiselling. I would put a wide chisel bit in the chuck, set to hammer stop. put the frame on...

    Javva Hub Help

Hi, I stupidly lent my circa 1997 Orange Prestige and 6 yrs later have recovered a sorry mess so the bulk of it is down at the LBS having a new drive train fitted as nothing was recoverable. Anyway the fron hub bearings were U/S so I obtained replacements form SimplyBearings ( excellent...

    Ammonia for stuck seatpost

Ammonia is a strong alkali. Aluminium is attacked by strong alkalis such as ammonia, sodium hydroxide (aka caustic soda, lye) So using ammonia on an ally post in an ally frame is not a good idea. Iron is attacked by strong acids but not alkalis so ammonia won't touch a rusted steel BB...
