    Peugeot 80's headset

Both my eighties Pugs used perfectly ordinary 1" standard threaded headsets. If you're in any doubt the best bet is always to take the bike, or at least the original part to your LBS. If you don't have vernier calipers and a thread gauge they probably will have. Yes older French bikes used...

Old bicycle parts? Where do you get them?

Bear in mind that most council dumps won't let you take anything away for a number of reasons. The biggest of which is that they have to meet government targets for the weight of waste recycled. Anything recylable, like metal they can melt down, will be weighed in.

    welding......!!!!!

Wouldn't expect it to be brazed on an old Giant.

    welding......!!!!!

I know some frame builders do it but if you check the spec sheets brazing is not recommended on 4130.

    BIG 531 bike

29.5" seat tube and 25" top tube. Now that's a funny shaped rider.

Tidy. Restored or just well cared for?

    welding......!!!!!

Actually your picture has loaded now and I can see the break so it's easier to answer your question. It looks like the original weld has failed. Since it is at an already welded joint the material should be nice and thick, which is good news from the MIG point of view. Another thing which is...

    welding......!!!!!

4130 is fine for MIG welding, however there are a number of reasons why you might not want to MIG weld your frame. The first is that MIG tends to produce pretty fat weld beads, not exactly neat. OK so you could grind or file it down. The second is that when you're welding a crack you need...

    700c / 650c

OK as far as it goes, but remember that low pro time trial bikes are to some extent peculiar to the UK. I tend to think of the 700c size as being equivalent to the old British 27 x 1 1/4" whereas 650 is the equivalent of the old British 26 x 1 1/4". As such 650c tends to be used on smaller...

    700c / 650c

You can't really say that 700c is the standard size for tubulars, since sprint rims can't be measured to the same standard as clincher rims. You measure a clincher rim at the bead seat, a sprint rim doesn't have bead seats. So while they are a very similar size they can't actually be said to be...

    got me another one...

It's a tidy bike for the age, I do have one question however: Are there a lot of short people on this forum? Really there do seen to be a lot of small frames cropping up on this forum.

Dunno the HLE tubed Pugs were ten times better than the 18-23 Raleighs.

Old bicycle parts? Where do you get them?

I generally buy my parts second hand. Ebay, classifieds, jumbles, car boots, you name it. One of the best sources is to buy complete bikes. Sometimes when you need a particular part it can be worth buying a complete bike for that part. For some reason people sell parts at high prices and...

    700c / 650c

The number is the nominal diameter of the inflated tyre. 700c would be roughly 700mm, 650c would be 650mm. The letter refers to the height of the tyre itself. So, for example, a 650c and a 650a may have roughly the same inflated diameter, but the c would have a fatter tyre. This may appear...

BSA Tour de France special Edition?

Found one of these in the weeds behind the railway station near work last year. Both wheels were trashed, but apart from that it looked sound. Even so it really wasn't worth carting all the way home on the train.

    Tubular tyres and wheels

Now you're puzzling me. I have a set of knobbly clinchers that say inflate to 30 - 60psi. OK so 30 isn't 25, but it's not 60 either.

    Tubular tyres and wheels

These days you can buy specialist goo for tubs. It's probably exactly the same latex stuff as no tubes.

    Newbies certainly not welcome

Sorry, but Fiat 127 great? Excuse me while I pop to casualty to get my sides sown up. My sister had a couple back when they were current and they were dire cars. Not only were they badly made, rust prone and unreliable but they had many specific faults. The brakes were appalling, the electrics...
