1999 Zaskar LE rigid road based build

Bit of an update. After moving the seat forwards on the rail, I've decided to leave it as is. A ride out with the other half on her Boardman road bike saw me keep up with her on the flat at a steady 16 to 18mph and only slightly fall back on long slog hills (Mainly due to my lack of...

I know this Heckler isn't going to get finished.. GF Project

Do you have access to jigs and industrial ovens ? It isn't as simple as replacing a tube with an aluminium frame. When they are made originally, the tubes are welded together and the whole frame goes through heat and quench cycles to give it strength. You can't just simply replace...

1999 Zaskar LE rigid road based build

I've got the CT2 high riser bar to match the seat post, but also want bar ends for road use. No way am I putting bar ends on risers though. Might get a 17.5 degree stem or just live with it. Also have a set of Mosso alloy forks with 20mm longer A2C, but feel they are too harsh for this...

1999 Zaskar LE rigid road based build

Cosmic sunrise indeed. I too couldn't bare selling it, as it was my first decent frame and bought brand new in 99. Before that I had a Pantera and a wrought iron 91 Timberline. It is certainly quick. So much so that I stood up and powered up a slight incline in top gear. Nearly barfed at...

I know this Heckler isn't going to get finished.. GF Project

I wouldn't go anywhere near that frame. The shock mount takes a fair load, and the heat from welding will have weakened the tubes. Aside from the fact that the welds themselves look rubbish, it just isn't worth the risk. A cheapo new hard tail frame from handsome dog or merlin etc will...

1999 Zaskar LE rigid road based build

Not entirely retro I realise, but hopefully enough so to attract comments :) After numerous builds and trying to sell the bike, it is now built as its going to stay. Just been for a 13 mile road ride and it is certainly faster than I am. Very quick and smooth gliding yet still quite...

GT Zaskar LE 1999 Cosmic sunrise

Thanks for the posts all :) It is indeed an Easton frame - 6061 tubing and the last year they were built in the good ol USA - be it a good or bad thing ;) Shall give it a few days longer before splitting, but should it go that way I'll honour the requests in order of posting.

GT Zaskar LE 1999 Cosmic sunrise

Thanks Steve. I have to agree the frame is a wonderfull looking beasty, and as it was the first real MTB I bought I'm struggling to part with it. Why is one so nostalgic about a lump of metal   I'll give it a week or so and let you know

GT Zaskar LE 1999 Cosmic sunrise

Before reading the below, if anybody would like feedback on me as a seller I have many good reports on a few different forums if needed :) I really don't want to sell this, but being realistic it just doesn't get used and I could do with the funds. Bought everything brand new apart from...

2011 Santa Cruz Superlight (pic heavy!)

Very nice. I love the way the superlight rides and always relish getting back on mine. Not sure how heavy the wheels are, but mine responded well to having some light-ish Hope Hoops fitted and going 2x10. Time less bikes in a world full of 85 linkage full suss bikes

    Pace RC36 EVO ii forks

Had these since brand new back in 2000. Only used for around 5 years in total and although I've been meaning to use them again, I just don't have the bike to do them any justice any longer. In good condition for age with no dents, cracks or marks other than a bit of decal eroding. Seem...

Help with forks for 99 Zaskar LE needed please

I've recently built up the old Zaskar and am now in much deliberation with myself about keeping it as is, replacing the frame with something more up to date, or tinkering further. Basically the forks now on it (2006 Reba Team air U-turn, set at 85mm), are simply too heavy for the bike and...

    1999 Zaskar LE updated

Update to this. Gil can do some stickers, but they are adapted versions of another frame. Not entirely what I would like, so if anybody stumbles over a sticker set please let me know :)

    1999 Zaskar LE updated

Thanks for the kind comments. The bits are stuff I've had tucked away or from the last change to my main bike, so the actual costs involved directly for the Zaskar are minimal. I agree it would look a lot better with new stickers, but I've asked before for some and nobody seems to have the...

    1999 Zaskar LE updated

Thought some here may appreciate the below. (And I do apologise as I have just copied my Bikeradar post  ) I realise it isn't retro at all really, but at least the old man of a frame (can't really call something this hard a 'girl' ) is still going strong. Starting place...

East Midlands Area chat and rides thread

Hi all. Being from sunny ville de' Coal in NW Leicester, I might just get along to one of the rides here eventually. We even have some good (if short) rides around the back yard between Loughborough, Ashby and Coalville. Not bad for flat ol Leicester.

The Introduce Yourself Here Thread III

Hi all :) I'm a 37yr old boy who's had a passion for cycling from an early age  Currently have a not so retro Santacruz Superlight and a Giant TCR C2 road bike, but am also resurecting my '99 ZaskarLE from the depths. It will have modern wheels, brakes and drivetrain although I'm...
