Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

So I made a little progress today. I am sure now that I can pull this off. I got the disk tab in today and tried it on for size. Untrimmed like this was a no-go. I would never be able to get the wheel on an off without messing with the brake. So I trimmed it a bit, still rough but...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

Yeah, it is a temp solution. The primer is just because the areas I sanded to prep for brazing started to rust overnight. So i can either strip off primer or I can strip off rust when the time comes. I prefer stripping off primer. And yes, I had thought about internal cable routing but given the...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

No, due to the spacing originally being only 114mm and cold set now to 135 the chainstay is too close to the rotor when the wheel is mounted. The disk tab will have to be mounted over the dropout if it will work at all. I have the disk mount on its way. I could have made my own but the steel...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

I brazed in some braces for the rear end. I used the same tube that I used for the chainstay brace, heated it, hammered it flat and mitered it to fit the shape of the rear triangle by hand. Lots of file work. I brazed it in and then hit it with the angle grinder to get it shaped right. I had to...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

The frame had some pretty heavy pitting but it is structurally sound. After sandblasting I filled the bad areas with hot brass and I cut out the chainstay brace, cold set the frame to 135mm and brazed in a new brace. My first time brazing was a bit ugly as you can see. I have since re-done it...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

After my last project was completed there were a few things about it that I was not satisfied with. Another forum member mentioned that the cable guides took away from the bike so I decided with my next build I would braze on cable guides. So I found the next victim. Rescued from the scrap yard...

    Modernised or ruined?

I was going to say that I don't understand taking an atiquated design and throwing money and modern parts at it. Then I thought for a second, I took a 1936 Mercury frame and put a modern internal geared hub and a suspension fork on it and I love it. So to each his own. Personally I like the look...

    Another Klunker build

Well, as I mentioned there are still finishing touches to be applied. I prefer to get the routing situated before I put on the chrome cable guides. The cables still need to be trimmed a bit.

    Another Klunker build

Finished. The Atom drum works really well with the deerhead levers. There are still a few minor finishing touches to iron out but she is good to go as is.

    Another Klunker build

So it has been almost 6 months. I finally made some progress and got the paint completed. The burgundy colored frame is a 24 inch Montgomery Ward kids bike from the late 30's. That will be the next project for my son. At this rate he will have outgrown it by the time I finish.

    1988 Klein Pinnacle

I relisted it with details about the crack. Sucks, when I bought it that area was under a thick coat of grease and dirt from the seatpost. I assume it is pretty common for them to crack there. I should have looked closer but at least the parts are worth twice as much as I paid for it.

    1988 Klein Pinnacle

Man, I am glad you noticed that! I can't believe I overlooked that. Looks like I will be ending the auction early. You just saved me a major headache. It would have sucked to sell it and then have to go through the return process.

1993 Marin Team FRS Full Suspension MTB

from the ad: This bike is exceedingly durable  , famous, rare, light and fast. It is the penultimate example of successful elastomer suspension. (New Elastomers) It cost $3,500 when new. That said, the cosmetic condition is fair to good while the mechanical condition is Excellent (I was...
