BoTM Feb 13 'Restoration Special' - Nominations Please

You have made the mistake of looking at them from a distance. Groves can only truly be appreciated up close. Cunninghams should be viewed from a distance.

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

Thanks. With builds like this it is important to have a plan and a vision for the bike. Never start a build without a specific goal. I have made that mistake in the past and it ends up getting costly. I agree with you, some bikes you just don't mess with. I have seen some truly rotten things...

Yeah that Orange is pretty slick. Nice clean cable routing and the colors give it a bit of flair without being over the top. Not a popular brand here in the states so I don't think I have ever seen one.

No worries. I get what you are saying. I have a 41 DX that is a reproduction of Gary Fishers repack bike right down to the Union drums. Alan Bonds actually helped me with that one. I also have 2 other Elgins, one of which was restored to original spec which was very difficult to complete. The...

So, you don't like the Elgin. It is certainly not for everyone. Thats fine but it is a bit more than a rusty old repainted frame. It is a classic and rare rusty old repainted frame. I don't expect anyone else to care or appreciate it the way I do but these old frames bring back alot of memories...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

There is a really good thread about acid etching headbadges here: http://forums.mtbr.com/frame-building/a ... 88806.html Basically you just get some aluminum, brass or copper sheet that is thin enough to bend easy and a laser printer with photo paper or toner transfer paper which is pretty...

The first trip was after I trimmed off the drop stand tap on the left side. I still had the dropout clamped in my vise and I was starting to file it smooth and I slipped. The metal was still quite sharp from the cut so I sliced my hand open under my thumb. That was 7 stitches and the cut was...

Reading my post again I see I made a mistake. I certainly didn't mean to imply that you had not done any work on the bike. Sorry about that. But you still lose points for offering up such an interesting bike without a thread dedicated to it with BETTER PICS!!!

    Shill Bidding on eBay

Ebay could easily resolve this by not charging for reserve auctions or making the fee for a reserve auction more reasonable.

You get points for taking a broke bike and making it something to be proud of. Anytime a good bike gets saved from the scrap yard it is a good thing.

BoTM Feb 13 'Restoration Special' - Nominations Please

Tough month. If my bike wasn't in the running it would be a tough call between the Zinn and the koski. I think the Zinn gets extra points because he did the work himself. Then again the Koski gets points because Joe Breeze did the work. Kinda a delemma, I would like to see someone who worked...

    1994 Amp Research Laguna Beach.CA B3

While I think the repair will probably hold if it were mine I would take that to a machine shop and have them cnc you a new one and then just weld it back on like the original. They could very easily reproduce that piece even with the Amp logo on it. Not sure how much that would cost though.

You should do one yourself. Maybe not as crazy as mine but you can build up a bomber style clunker pretty cheap. They are easy and loads of fun. If I ever build another like this I will buy a proper welding setup. The little bernzomatic torch I used sucked.

By definition anything that has been restored cannot be original. Semantics.

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

I took it out and gave it a proper beating today. Did about 28 miles. So far there have been no problems. I was concerned that the rear wheel may move in the dropouts but I took a few jumps and drops today and it didn't budge. Braking has gotten even better now that the pads are bedded in...

Yeah, it took alot of those to keep me sane during that build.

I wish I had some better photos but I think this bike fits this months category pretty well. 5 months worth of work included cold setting the frame, brazing on chainstay and seatstay braces, brazing on a disk brake mount and cable guides. Turning down a 1 1/8 headset to fit a pre-war headtube...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

Took it out for a few miles of dirt today. The 2.35 tire in the rear is cutting in pretty close but it sure takes the edge off the small bumps. 34.6 pounds as it sits. I think if I swapped the DX pedals, Changed to a carbon bar and went tubeless with the tires I could get this thing under 30...

Bringing a Pre-War frame into the 20th century.

Finally got the headset turned down to fit and installed. After that everything else just fell into place. I took it for the first ride around the neighborhood and I am absolutely thrilled with the way it rides. It is exactly what I had hoped for. I will hit the dirt tomorrow and see how it...
